Wii to use Friend Codes (like the DS)

When the official Nintendo Wii site was first discovered way back in the a.m., it apparently sported both WiFi and Virtual Console links, but someone at team Nintendo offloaded them from the Interweb before too many people got actual new information out of the site.

Reader Seanspace got a quick look and said the site promises that Nintendo's horrid Friend Code system will be making a big appearance on the Wii.

From the site:

"Nintendo has your online safety in mind. Thanks to our unique Friend Code system, you can control whom you play with online. Playing online is a great way to connect and reconnect people you want to play games with!"

Dear oh dear...

I hope they have some sort of voice chat system like Xbox Live so you can talk to people not on your friends list.

Friend codes were okay for the DS, but i sure hope they come to there senses and go for a more up to date live style friends list.

I can't see it happening though and even think comms may be out too just to make it uber kiddie friendly.

i dont know much about wii online play, so what you saying is that you will only be able to play online with someone if you know them.

i dont think they will allow chat like with the xbox, the friends list thing will work so u cant get some idiots swearing over it etc. I guess you could at the mo with metroid tho as that has VIOP.

For PIFCO,

currently on the DS you can choose to play against people withing close proximity(no wireless access point needed), continental, or worldwide via the wi-fi (over an wireless connection). The friends codes allow others to connect direct to you rather than searching and hoping that you find your mate. It's similar to a buddy list on the Xbox but you have to put a code in each time (not sure if they save though?). It is good in a way that people cannot hijack your games a bit like Tiger Woods on the 360 which pisses me off when I set a game up and some idiot jumps in and you have to try and get rid of him!!

your codes are saved, the only thing i dont like about them is the fact u have a seperate code for each game, a universal one would be nice so once u know your mates number you can add him/her to every game you have.
