    Default Texas Hold'em

I played poker properly for the first time last week with my mate and it was brilliant. The kit was bought from woolies and it was called Texas Hold'em or something like that.

Can anyone give me any pointers in strategies or where I can get any more info on this?

First of all learn what your premium pocket hands are, that is learn what to play (calling the blind or the raise) or throw away before the flop. Read some articles online or buy a Hold Em book. Play some online poker with www.partypoker.com www.paradisepoker.com or any other number of clients, you can play for free initially which will give you an idea initially of strategy and what to play but as it's free you don't really get a feel for a very important facet of the game and that is how much to bet in relation to your cards at any given time in a hand/value bets/the right time to push all in etc. Challenge on Sky channel 121 (I think) show poker just about every night and that's good for learning what's what although bear in mind that it's heavily edited and therefore nothing like the longer more drawn out process of playing poker yourself.
Once you've grasped the essentials play some low value online tables or sit and go's which are small tournaments of five to ten people or play a free to play tournament which often have cash prizes and can give you hours of valuable practice.

If you had something more specific to ask i could probably give you a much better answer, but theres thousands of sites dedicated to poker strategy, from in depth forums to rather basic articles, they say it takes minutes to learn but a lifetime to master.

Heres a good small site for beginers from a member of bet-the-pot.com's forum

    http://www.andymcnish.btinternet.co....uide/index.htm

Google will find you more info on the game than you could read in a lifetime.

Once youve played and read a bit more, decide whether to stick to tournemnt or cash play(the style needed in each to be succseful is pretty different so its a good idea to stick to one or the other at first), then if you want to get serious, give me a shout and i will recomend some good books to read.

Exactly, it's such a broad topic. Learning can be quite organic though, you find yourself learning to master certain facets of your game as time goes by, playing position is a huge part of the game that I paid very little heed to for the first few months of playing but when I learnt more about it my stats took a huge positive jump.

Some good advice there - definately start playing for free to get a feel for betting and keeping up with a game online... but just keep in mind that anything thats free aint poker. People will bet all of there money on everyhand... why not if its free!

If you decide to get a bit more serious i recommend buying "harrington on holdem" volume one and two - almost everything you need to know about tournament poker.

Aggression, Position, putting people on cards to work against, gotta agree with montana's suggestion with Harringtons book.
You dont win the main event and then come to the final table on 2 occasions in big fields for nothing.
i think harringtons achievement is better than chans or brunsons imo

32red, com , victor chandlers and mansion.com have excellent interface's for online poker.

but you wanna join a local casino and doing the card room in the cash games and tourneys they have.

    http://www.grosvenor-casinos.co.uk/flash.htm
    is a place to try

go and play a £2 buy in at a no limit event it's an awesome night out
plus its cheap way to practice until the big cash games.

If you know someone is on a draw make them pay for it .

Mostly good advice Del but i have to disagree with some of your comments, Action dan may have won the main event and got to the final table twice more, but brunson won it twice in a row and won 8 more braclets plus has many more wsop final tables and money finishes, he also had a hand in actually bringing the game to vegas, wrote the original THE poker book and at 73 years old is still earning from the game just as he has done for the last 40 odd years, Harringtons a very very good conservative player, Doyles a legend

Harringtons books are quality and are fast becoming THE books for tournements players though, i just started volume 3.

Also, the £2's you reccomend live are the rebuys right?, maybe its different where you live but at the ones ive played nobody passes anything during the rebuy bit, then the structure is too fast after the rebuys, theres very little fold equity in the games and you wont advance your game much IMO, i found them pretty frustrating, the £10 is better but not by much.

Tbh, and im not sure why i didnt put this in my first reply, Patience and Discipline (with your starting requirments) are enough to beat free and low buy in games, also remember to fold the moment you know your beat.

yeah its just a cheap way of learning the 2 pound rebuys gets you experience playing with people.
the fields in his finals apperearances were miles bigger in doyles day 2003 WSOP (839 players) and the 2004 WSOP (2576 players). awesome.
Hellmuth has tied chan and brunson now with his 10th bracelet this year.

over 8000 this year in the main event its getting mad.

    www.Gcasino.co.uk
is new casino open near strangeways prison goin this week will right my thoughts at the weekend.

Watch some Games of Sammy Farha in High Cash Games unbelieveable some of the plays he pulls off

Tis true thats the fields were much bigger the last few years, im not taking anything away from harrington m8 its a stunning acheivment.
