Goto start>run type "cmd", hit return, type "ipconfig" and hit return, it should give you the ip address of the pc, and the subnet and gateway issued by your router. Make sure the subnet and gateway are the same as the router. If it gives your pc's ip as starting 169.xxx.xxx.xxx then it is not connected properly- Double check the wep key, as it will connect to the router if you get it wrong, but the router will not give out an ip address or let the pc authenticate, so you will never get it online.
okay so how do I change it?
thanks so far.

most of those wireless devices come by default in dhcp it gives you the ip`s by itself. anyway do the same steps chubblies told you and set those ip addresses in the pc and it should work remember the ip adresses have to be diferent from the laptop and the pc but the rest have to be the same.
right, can now get pc and laptop onto internet at same time, but not connect to each other, any ideas?
thanks again

So you want to use a manual ip? The default gateway will be your router's IP, the subnet will be the same as your laptop, along with the DNS ip's. To change it, rt click my network places, goto properties, rt click the connection and go to properties, scroll down to internet protocal (tcp/ip) and double click, tick the checkbox that says use manual address, and enter the information in there. Remember, all the fields should be the same as the laptop EXCEPT the 1st one ip address, which should be something like 192.168.0.xxx, and the xxx part of the number should be the only part that you change-ie if the laptop ip is 192.168.0.10, the pc should be 192.168.0.12
EDIT-just seen your post, if you cannot get to the other machines files, you probably have not enabled sharing, have a look here for info

ok my friend you need to share...lets say your hard disk and set your computers to be in the same workgroup (start>control panel>system>equipment name>click on change) you have to set diferent machine names but same workgroup, and also allow in your firewall "share files and printers" if you are running windows xp sp2
will try tonight cheers.
