    Buying Martins to Newcastle

Apparently the deal is all but complete, but what do you guys reckon?

I personally think he's a class player but just not sure if he's got enough physicality - alongside his pace - to cut it in the premiership. my mate goes on about him tearing arsenal apart in the champions league a year or two ago so he's obviously a good player but not convinced he's the right kind of player for us. would rather see collins john to be honest - quality player for half the price.

    21 or 28 ????

Apparantly babayaro says he played in the nigerian youth team with him, babs is 28 so if martins is telling the truth that would have made him 12 when he was in the nigerian youth team? cant see it.

    Anyone have a guess?

Bit of a gamble spending 9 million when you are not sure how old he is?

if a doctor slices him open, he can just count the rings and tell his age.........or is that for trees? anyway....

Big gamble I think, but good to see Newcastle fans being more realistic with their targets i.e. Collins John ROFLFLFOOELELROFOFLER!

Is Owen really supposed to be out for the next 18 months, I read that in the Guardian sometime last week, sounds very serious if thats true.

Its Ameobi's time to shine. had a good one this weekend, and now he is our main man he may bag a few more goals. If martins is actually 21, that will be a great buy. He has been around for a while, and is quick like Owen used to be, but he like to run at people. hope it gets sorted soon.

Yea, but the checks are not quite a stringent as over here.

I guess it goes like this:

    Martins: I want a passport.
Passport office: Sure, how old do you want to be?
Martins: Well I was born in 1978 but I understand that older players are not in demand as much as younger ones.
    Passport office: So, how old...
Martins: Lets call it an even 1985.
    Passport Office: No problem.

I think the mix up came from the Nigerian web site that posted his age as 28.
I think he'll be a good signing. We need someone and soon!
Also read a rumour that Klose was being watched the other day. I think 10m would be better spent there. Or hopefully on both players.

i agree klose obviously would be fantastic but, lets not join the hordes of unrealistic fans, and face facts that klose isn't going to leave a champions league club - where he is adored by the fans - for us in the uefa qualifying round! i'd be happy with martins (tho fee seems steep) and collins john/nugent as well as bridge and a centre back.

    From nufc.com...

Newcastle United confirmed on Tuesday morning that they had reached agreement with Inter Milan to purchase striker Obafemi Martins for an undisclosed fee that's being touted elsewhere as £10m.

However, SkySports have thrown the name of Portsmouth into the ring as late bidders, although there's no word from Fratton Park that they have made a bid, let alone had one accepted.
Since when have Pompey had that much loot?

martins is a good signing i think, considering they are not in the CL it's pretty hard to attract much better without paying ridiculous wages.
