Have you tried flashing the CMOS and rechecking your jumper settings of all drives?

I know this is very basic but its a good start to check if your mobo is ok.

sounds like you've made the new one the master and your boot disk the slave !

Maybe try changing the boot disk selection in the bios and as dappa says check the disk drive jumpers and ensure your old disk is marked as primary and the new one as slave.

cmos is a last resort mate..... Some motherboards require the cable to be in the primary hdd first and then in the secondry one, so try putting primary hdd into the first cable slot after it comes out of the M/B

If your getting the same message after removing the new drive then i think the CMOS reset is the only option.

It couldnt be easier m8, check your manual to locate it, some are different, it will be a jumper or switch. If its a jumper it will be sitting on a set of 3 pins. All you do is move the jumper from the 2 pins its on to the opposite pins, so you are moving it from pins 1 and 2 onto pins 2 and 3, then move it back again.

    Hope that makes sense?

Check the bios still sees your original drive, if not you might have knocked a cable loose or possibly killed the drive. Try moving the drive to the Secondary IDE port to see if that makes a differenceor try feeling the drive when you switch the PC on to see if it's still spinning.

Take out both the IDE cable with the HDD's on and put just your main HDD onto the other IDE cable boot into BIOS and set all to automatic see if HDD gets picked up, you must be able to get into BIOS as it is trying to boot from HD.

If you get this to work try putting this IDE cable in the other port and repeating the pervious step. I think your cable is faulty. other thing is the ethernet controller sowin in your error could show IRQ issues but doubt it very much and would boot further.

it seems to see the hDD as it tells me its capacity but cant seem todo anything with iti tried swapping the IDE1 and 2 so i assume the problem isnt the motherboard as the dvd drive seems to be working but same error message as ever is there. I'm thinking the hdd is buggered is there anyway to salvage it?

best thing to do is take it round ur mates house and stick you main HD into his comp as a slave.
    a. you will be able to copy all the data to his HD
    b. do a Error Check (right click, properties, tools, error check).

The second has saved me in the past.
I dont think you have a motherboard/major hardware issue just seems weird that your main drive crashes at same time you put new drive in, when you boot the comp does the drive still spin up ok?

if the old comp has picked it up and is running with it I would seem to me that hardware wise there is not much wrong, especially with the drive.
In your old pc it would be worth taking out the main drive and putting the one you are having issues with in as the main drive to see if it will boot on that pc, this will tell you either some hardware gone in other pc or that the files are corrupt on this disk.

Main thing is tho least you got chance to back your porn up ;-)

I guess the old one is IDE? are the new ones IDE or sata?

If they are all IDE then there is no point in flashing the bios as if the controller on the motherboard is working for one drive it should be for another.
