Help IP address keeps changing ?

Hi all i have a question here , im currently on telewest broadband , normally when u get your ip from your isp its not supposed to change (ie it should be a static ip) when i turn off my pc i still leave the power on at the modem and dont completely turn it off from the wall ! But i notice when i turn my pc on it always detects the proxy settings giving me another ip from the isp system , i have my modem through the ethernet connection on the back of my pc , could this be the cause it always losing my current ip , would i be better hooking it up through the usb instead ? would it stop changing ? its just that i have accsess to ftps and there all IP based and when my ip changes all the time i have to then contact my friend who then has to contact the guy who owns the ftp to change my ip again

Any help would be great on this matter

    Thanks

i think with the cable providers you do not get a static ip address unless you pay for it (well i dont), if however you want to use the ip for something there are programs out there that run on your pc and update a sort of web address for your pc....pc anywhere comes to mind but thats not the name...people use this for dc hubs etc.

just google static ip in google and you will find it.

Very few providers give a static IP as standard - and its slightly safer if you have adynamic IP. Plugging in via USB will give a crapper connection. If you always need a pointer to your IP use something like NoIP or DyDNS etc - there are loads of them out there. As said a bove small prog runs and updates the central database of what your IP is
