    Default Ipaq and sat nav

I've just bought myself an Ipaq HX2490b and it's the muts nuts.

What do I have to do to convert it to sat nav? I don't trust any advice from those guys in the shop. They'll sell their granny if they get commission.

Buy a bluetooth GPS unit for about £60 off ebay and get a copy of Tomtom 6 or silimar - that's all you need.

if you are going to be using it in the car you can get a windscreen nount thing that has the power a speaker and connection point for a wired gps reciver, for about £30 quid, and a wirred gps unit for the same for abotu the £30 quid mark, so its just a matter of poppin it in the holder and starting tom tom, and bingo sat nav, but with a compact flash version its easier, and you can then use the pda for geocaching etc, something else to do with ya pda that way

    In summary:
    • windscreen mount
    • 12v charger
    • GPS receiver
    • Tomtom5 or 6 or similar software / maps
    • SD /CF card (for the maps) - UK map is about 200mb
And if you drive a Renault or Merc with heat reflective screens, you may need a re-radiating antenna 'cause these screens can reduce / block the gps signals. All available on eBay for modest sums.

Thanks for your help guys. What's the difference between a cf and an sd card?

If you are going to buy a sat receiver, I strongly recommend a Sirf 3 receiver. personaly I have the globalsat BT338 (sirf 3) and its awesome, they are available on fleabay new for less than £70 delivered. Trust me I have tried so many different receivers and this is the only one that could maintain a good lock in and around the tall buildings of central london. It seriously outstrips the signal strength of the TomTom Go units (Sirf 2 and loose all signal in central london for 100s of meters at a time)

PS it works perfectly through Renault /Merc windscreens although sig strength is reduced

i am selling a tomtom bluetooth receiver with all leads, cables etc.... its the original tomtom bluetooth and comes with tomtom 3.............. in BST section on here someone else is offering but depends on price if he gets it HTH.

I would definately reccomend this unit, only used twice or so before getting tomtom all in one unit. Either way you can get a bluetooth unit as suggested from ebay too....

I dont mean to be funny TinCan but genuine tomtom 3 receivers are only Sirf 2 and therefore leave a lot to be desired especialy in built up areas.

is it a tomtom 3 receiver or a tomtom 5 receiver you have ?????

if it looks like this then it is sirf 3
    http://www.superetrader.co.uk/tomtom...-ii-p-177.html

but the one you showed me looks like this
    http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/tomtombtgps.php

which is sirf 2 (despite what amazon say) TBH that model was launched before sirf 3 was available !!
