Online Problem

I've got the latest update and not installed anything new but the other day firefox crashed and froze and led to me restarting my pc (running XP). When I rebooted the system was running extremely slow and it took 13 minutes or so to log in on my username (I share the computer with family).

After that my comp itself is running fine but now firefox is incredibly slow and constantly shows "page not found" errors that when I refresh a few times suddenly work. Pages I can't view on my username I can view fine under another XP log-on. I get the same problem with Internet Explorer so I'm thinking it might be a connection problem?

I'm on 1MB broadband and, although I'm no expert, the connection settings look exactly the same as before.

Any suggestions on how to fix my lazy piece of shit computer would be greatly appreciated!

if its fine on other users profiles then it won't be the connection. The easy fix is to create a new profile and copy your docs accross to it. The other way is to remove all temp files, cookies etc.

Nooo it's not helped. The problem has now spread to the other users of the computer although sites I can't view will work on other log-ons and vice versa.

I've cleared all temporary files, history, cookies etc. and restored the system back to a time long forgotten. Ran virus checks and adaware, still nowt. Oh well, it's time for a reformat anyway I think.

is it slow with other things or just online stuff ie is it slow to load progs in general?

I just got home from work and it's absolutely fine now! I was in the middle of moving all my stuff into a new profile to see how that was earlier on but it's seems back to normal.

Could be a hard drive problem if moving files around helped to sort it, you could also try using File Mon and ProcExplorer to trace exactly what is going on...

I had a problem with a directory that contained a lot a video files I was working on... One of them was corrupted, which made the PC just about hang when browsing that Directory... just deleting the file sorted it out...
