problems getting files from hard drive access denied

hi my dads pc blew up and he has a new pc i have installed his hard drive as a slave in my machine. i know all his documents are stored in c:\documents and settings peter but when i try to access this it says access denied is there anyway round this as his hard drive has his accounts on it and i really need to put them to disk for him.
any help would be much appreciated thanks

Not 100% sure, but I think you need to create an account on your PC using his original username and password, then change to that account (If you're not admin) and try it then.

hi tried that it just gives a new account peter.peter231067 or something like that. would there be anywhere my father could take this drive to have it done (obviously i'd prefer to do it but if it needs an expert who'd be best to try?

If you log on as an administrator and go to the folder in question right click, properties, security, advanced, owner and set it to you - if it doesn't show this option make sure you have simple file sharing disabled in tools/folder options/view (near the bottom of the list).
