LCD Output On Laptop

I have a Sony Vaio BX196VP Laptop and a Samsung 32" LCD (LE32R51BDX) both have a pc connection.

Laptop has monitor out and lcd has pc in (same connection) i have a cable (15 pin VGA) that i can connect my latop and lcd together with

i have a problem that i cannot get my lcd to detect my pc at all.

iassume it is a laptop settings problem as i have an lcd upstairs and cant get it to connect to that either (my old laptop worked fine with this cable)

Any ideas

Have you pressed the function key on your laptop to get it to output via the video out or is it turned off in the bios?

I have enabled as many 'outputs' as i can find in control panel. and also just found out that the 's1' key on the laptop toggles between lcd screen and extenal output. Not checked bios yet but will do.

another thing. if i press the 's1' key and dont connect the vga cable to my lcd tv, then all i get is a 'beep' and nothing happens, however, if i connect the cable to the lcd tv and press the 's1' key, the laptop flashes black and and i get a 'connected hardware tone' but again nothing on lcd tv

my last acer laptop was well easy, all i had to do was enable second screen in control panel 'display' and it worked.

this sony laptop seems much harder to do

its just i have loads of films on my laptop that i would liketo play through my tv and cant be bothered with all the hassel of converting from divx etc... to dvd and then binning the dvd after a few weeks
