Got it sorted now, I've installed the GTA VCS cheatdevice and got it running at 333mhz and it works perfectly.
I was using an ISO ripped down to 900mb

apart from some homebrew (and this might not even be the case anymore, not 100% sure) that still only work fully in 1.5, I can't think of a reason not to be on the new 2.71se. it runs everything from the xmb. and with the added no-umd option, you don't even need a disk in the drive. upgrade mate, if you don't like it you can always downgrade anyway.
Bug
ok iv done it lol it says SE-B i see there is a se-b3 put i cannot seem to update to this it says updating in 5 secs then goes back to menu still see SE-B in system info not SE-B3
and cannot still get gta to work the game could not be started (80020321)
got this gta to work now still says system se-b

just done my 1.50, to 2.71 SE-B, upgraded like a charm, no problem,
also did the se-b3 update aswell,
have put on GTA VCS, stripped the iso to make it 700mb, booted first time!
I've just done my v1.5 PSP this avo, worked fine, i did the 2.71SE-A first then incrementally upgraded to B''.
Loving it, everything works a treat in noUMD mode and was dead easy to install, everyone should do it
i love it now no rebooting all time just copy the iso on go to mem card load game super nice one boys

Sorry to labour the point...my PSP is v2.5 (and was when I got it a few weeks ago). So I *don't* need GTA to downgrade it to v1.5? Coz all the guides I've read, and the couple of downgraders I've tried, seem to suggest that I do.
Can someone point me in the direction of a downgrader that will will work without GTA?
Thanks,
W.

if you upgrade your 2.5 psp to 2.71 first then downgrade to 1.5 youdo not need GTA or any umd at all.
download the 2.71 firmware, stick it in PSP/GAME/UPDATE
run it from the psp then use the easy downgrader for 2.71, to make it a 1.5
very easy to do.

that's the one you want, does it all for you
Ok, I bit the bullet and updated to this, version B" (3) and it's running sweet, although the only ISO I've tried so far, Astonisha Story, still seems to require a UMD in the drive, I'll test some others later.
But I now have under 2.71 SE the button in the Japanese config, O for enter X for cancel, is there an easy way to sort this into the European\US config.
But I'm liking this so far

Done mine really impressed, just a quick question. I cant get rid of the 'corrupted data' icon on my mem stick files. I have tried holding the R button when starting up and selecting the option there for hiding corrupt data icons but it doesnt do it.
On old devhook all you had to do was change the names to SCE or something and that would hide the corrupt data.
Anyone managed it
cheers
bub
I also find that some of the icons still come up as corrupt
do you have the kxploited eboots in the correct game folder? you now have game and game150, chuck them in game150 and that should sort out the corrupted icons
Thanks everyone...I've manged to get my v2.5 upto 2.71...down to hacked 1.5 and upto 2.71SE B...all without GTA!
Can't seem to get up to 2.71 B2 though. Memory card led flashes and then the psp switches off :-(
Still, I haven't even got a decent sized memory card to try games on yet ...although I just got a 2GB on fleabay for £6.50! (yeah, yeah, it's fake - seller's got 57,000 feedback though!).
