my pc died

hi just wondering if anyone has had a simlar problem and what they did

i went to turn my pc on a couple days a ago and it sounded like it did a post test and everything but the moniter never came on i restarted and checked everything but still the same

i've unpluged everything but the bare essentionals like motherboard (onboard grafics) ram pro but no change

i can't check beep codes cos i never pluged the little speaker in and i'm at uni now so kinda limited with supplys

anyone got any ideas my gut feeling is that its the board

your gut feeling could well be correct, but lets try a couple of things before we scrap it, it could be just the onboard video thats the problem can you beg or borrow a graphics card, then fit, it go into bios (if you can) and load bios setup defaults and ensure on board video is disabled if the option is available, while the case is open check the seating of memory modules, it would help if we knew your motherboard make and model/cpu etc.

if its very old the problem could just be your cmos battery especially if the last time you used it all was well.

if you do decide to change the battery be sure to allow it plenty of charge time (dont unplug it from the wall for 24 hrs.)gl.

try the psu , have you got a mates pc you can swap parts with ?

Em obvious question but are there any lights on your monitor? Unplug your monitor from the pc, power the monitor on and see if there's anything on the display, else try it on a spare pc if you have one. Let us know... could well just be your monitor. Start with the basics.

Unlikely to be your psu as pc powering up and posting etc. but it's possibility. Good chance it is indeed the onboard graphics (in which case graphics card could sort) or sys board (in which case oh dear). Could also be your cpu but these die much less frequently... might be worth a reseat tho.

Once you've tried all that I'd say you'll know what's up.

hi everyone i tried a couple of those things but couldn't really get anyparts to test with so i took a gamble and brought a new board and it now works a treat. thanx for the advice

Good stuff, glad to hear you got it sorted. Board might still be ok and just require a graphics card tho, but hey you have it fixed now so I'm sure you ain't too worried about it.

yeah i thought about that but i i'd have to bring it home to get a graphics card which i couldn't be bothered to do and i was a bit pissed off so just threw it in the bin
