pc not booting

Hi folks.

My brother just phoned me to say his computer is "looping", says when he turns it on it recognises all his drives and memory, goes to blue screen but just before loading bar get to the end it all starts over again and again and again!!!

He says the last thing he did was microsoft update, tried starting in safe mode but same happens says he can get into bios but all looks ok (hes not good with computers).

His o/s is win xp pro.
Any help advice appreciated.
His wife will kill him when she gets home!!!

He needs to get into the bios (which you say he can manage) and swap the boot order to make his CD/DVD rom drive the first bootable device. Then boot up with the WinXP disk in the drive.

Once WinXP setup has loaded all the drivers he will be able to select option "R" (when prompted) to enter the recovery console, from where he can do lots of clever stuff, like:

chkdsk /r (to check/repair the HD sectors)

fixmbr (if the master boot record is corrupt)
