anyone know alot regarding turbos? dump valve done want to dump ???

hi just a question regarding turbo boost, this being my first car with a turbo im not really up to scratch on turbo motors, i know some people hate dump valves but i do like them each to there own i suppose.

quick question is my escort turbo i origanally had a bailey dv 26 dump valve on the car when i bought it,, it was connected the side of the rs turbo charge carryer, i when i got over 2000 revs i could hear the t3 turbo spool up and then slight chatter noise but the dump valve dident work? no sound whatsoever ?

so i thought faulty dump valve so i went out and bought another make, fitted it and same problem its not giving anythink out what so ever ???

anyone have any ideas why it dont seem to be working ???


i know the turbos fine as it spools up and i can hear it chatter slightly?

is the dump valve in the right place mine connects to a totally diffrent place will get some pics up if you want mine connects in the middle of a samco hose coming from the intercooler to the start of the carrer pipe

will double check in the morning (i think thats the way mine connects ) when its light does it have a boost gauge is that reading ok if it has

also m8 if you rev it blip the thottle should not need to rev the balls of it (get some 1 to rev it from inside of the car) if you look at the dump valve can you see the valve moving ie the spring and the rod which will open and close the gaps on the valve which will give it its sound

i dont have a boost gauge, i have looked at the dump valve when under bonnet i have also manually rev,ed the throttle under bonnet but the dump valve piston dont even move ??

im not sure whats going on with it its done nothink on 2 dump valves now ruleing out possiblilty of faulty dump valve.

i know some people connect there dump valve on there charge carryer i.e rs turbo and some fiesta turbo owners, so cant see a problem?

also i have even moved the vacume pipe on top of dump valve to the back of my efi inlet manifold to see if it was a vacume problem but its still the same?

will get you some pics of mine tomorrow mine is a cvh rs turbo but i would think the setup should be similar my vacume pipe has a 3 way t piece 1 pipe goes to the boost gauge the other 2 the dump valve and the third to the inlet manifold will get you some pics of that aswell the valve should move connected the carreir pipe it may sound stupid have you checked for a blockage on the pipe cuming from the carrier to the dump valve pressure has to be coming out of there which it has got 2 move the internals of the dump valve which in theory would give it the sound it sould close as you rev it then open when you ease of the thorttle

jjcool - Check the small vaccum pipe coming off the end of your dump valve, see if it's split or if there is a little valve on the pipe?
Which side of the throttle body is the vaccum pipe connected to?
What make of dump valve is it, and what engine management are you running?

u say u have a escort turbo, is that pic your engine bay mate? if so post spec as have built and helped alot of people with turbo fords. should be able to help, sounds to me at a quick read a vacum problem, i e a hose split or clip loose, pm me if any questions,

The dump valve pistons aren't moving so even if it was quiet it wouldn't work

i checked the hose going from charge caryer to dump valve and theres no blockage,

it was connected to the right side, i then changed the vacume pipe and connected it to the back of the fei manifold, but it dident make any diffrence , i had a bailet dv26 dump vlave and i had same problem it dident make a sound, i thought it may of been faulty so i got rid of it, and bought a blow off valave twin trumpet, not sure of the make.
the engine managment im useing is megasquirt.

yeah thats my engine bay mate its a for 2l zetec turbo, i checked and cant see any split in vacume hose mate.

Not all turbod cars have dump valves. The noise is created when the excess charge is dumped into atmosphere. On cars with factory fitted dump valves where you can't hear anything, the excess charge is dumped into the air intake, so it goes back into the engine.

mmm is the motor still pullling hard when it comes on boost? do u get chatter from the turbo when you back off the gas?? , can u post a pick of the whole engine bay as is now with the fault, might be able to see something out of place ???

hmm well it pulls but only slightly mate after 2000 rpm you can hear the turbo spool up, but the chatter its quiet.

mmm only ever had this once before but take off the charge carrier(the bit the valve is attached to) and check underneath to make sure theres no holes, ive seen the weld break around the new hole for the valve

well i cant see any holes mate, bit hard to tell unless you take all the pipes off.

do u mean the weld where the screw for dump valve connects to the charge carryer?

if so it looks ok to me mate

can i ask when you say its only happned once before did you mean it was leaking and the dump vlave never worked?

yer the weld split and yes the valve was not working at all, also had next to no boost, was seeing only 0.4 boost when the car was set to run 1.7 bar

i blew down the pipe after charge carryer and noticed its not air tight theres a small his when im blowing down the pipe, however not sure if its suppost to be air tight.

hard to see where its leaking on your own.

the charge carrier should be air tight mate, as it is the only pipe in for air into the engine

there seems to be a leak at the back of the inlet where i blocked up hole with a nut when i blow through charge carryer pipe.
