    Help Speakers

Right, bit of an odd one this.

I have just thrown away an old stereo, as it's knackered. But have kept the four speakers I had with it (for now) as they are still in good nick.

Now I know very little about this, but wondered if I can hook them up to anything else?

The reason I ask is that they simply have wires that come out the back, went into a hole in the back of the stereo and then held in place with a sort of clamp - one for the black wire and one for the red.

I'd like to maybe use them for the PC and/or my TV setup. Is there some kind of adapter/connector I could buy to hook them up?

    Cheers.

    You'd need a amplifier.

    TV/PC>Amp>Speakers.

    Bugger, really?

I had a feeling that might be the case, but like I say, don't know much about 'sound' type stuff.

You should have no problem with connecting the speakers to another device. Chance are though you will need some kind of amplifier.

On the PC side the outputs you will have will be a pre-out (un amplified) and headphone jack (not powerful enough to power speakers).

Your TV may have external speaker connectors already however and may already be able to take the cables as is. If all else fails you can pop to maplins and buy some connectors for very little money (30p each or something more than likely) and wire them up yourself. Red wire is positive (+) and black wire is negative (-)

One more thing to bear in mind is the rating of the speakers. If its a 4 ohm speaker then ideally you need to connect them to an amp that outputs 4 ohm signals. Most amps and even some TVs (I know Toshiba have this) have an option to switch between ohm ratings to match the speakers up. If you plug them in wrong the worst you will probably get is a bit of a muted sound.

You'll only need a cheap, simple amp. Ask around.
