    Default High latency on PIPEX

    Went on Battlefield 2142 earlier and noticed my ping in game was around the 150ms mark which is about as good as I would get on 56k.

    So I thought I'd try a tracert to jolt:

    Code:
      1     <1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  192.168.1.1
      2   245 ms   196 ms   194 ms  l1.ar02.gs1.dsl.pipex.net [62.241.161.244]
      3   273 ms   196 ms   194 ms  ge-1-1-0-0.cr01.gs1.dsl.pipex.net [62.241.161.10
    2]
      4   199 ms   195 ms   199 ms  g3-22-3802.cr05.tn5.bb.pipex.net [62.72.141.25]

      5   197 ms   210 ms   196 ms  g1-1-6.er01.tn5.bb.pipex.net [62.72.140.142]
      6   192 ms   186 ms   195 ms  ge-0-0-0-3801.jolt-gw.cust.pipex.net [212.241.24
    1.14]
      7   188 ms   192 ms   200 ms  secure.jolt.co.uk [82.133.85.65]
    I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting the connection, however the problem persists. I am assigned a different IP address everytime I reconnect, although it has remained in the 81.179.x.x range.

    PIPEX technical support is fucking useless too. After explaining I was suffering from latency problems the agent asked me whether I was having problems connecting. Grr

    Some "handy tips" they offered before I put the phone down was to reinstall my modem drivers (despite being connected using an ethernet ADSL modem), try the modem on another computer (to no avail.), and ensure that I am not using an extension lead (which I am not).

    My line stats are as follows, with the left-hand figure denoting downstream, and the right-hand figure denoting upstream:

    Line Rate || 8128 Kbps / 448 Kbps
    Latency Type || Fast
    Noise Margin || 16.8 dB / 27.0 dB
    Line Attenuation || 17.0 dB / 9.5 dB

    Anyone else on PIPEX suffering with similar problems tonight?

    Managed to connect and now been assigned an IP address in a range different to the 81.179.x.x as stated above.

    Connected using this IP range 85.210.x.x and now my tracert and ping results are MUCH better:

    Code:
      1   <1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  192.168.1.1
      2    24 ms    21 ms    23 ms  l1.ar03.hx4.dsl.pipex.net [62.241.161.230]

      8    23 ms    25 ms    23 ms  secure.jolt.co.uk [82.133.85.65]

    Yes I am. Very sluggish tonight. I'm on a 1mg connection but am in the process of moving up to PipexMax so I assumed it was that. Maybe not.

    Never had a problem before which made me think it was the 'moving over' that was causing the slow speed.

    Forgive the intrusion, but how are you managing to move to PipexMax? I'm also on 1mb Pipex but they say there are no options to upgrade existing customers for the forseeable future. Did you cut some kind of deal/blackmail? Very interested Mr O. PM if needs be.. I got no answer to my last 3 emails about changing to Max

    To be honest, I didn't know you couldn't upgrade. I was looking to upgrade to a faster connection and I phoned Pipex first. It was a very short conversation but this was the jist:

    Me: "Alright mate, finally got through after 45 mins" (only 20 really). I'm on a 1mg connection for 23.99 and noticed that a few of my friends, that I recommended to Pipex I might add, are on up to 8mg for an extra quid...what's all that about?"

    Pipex: "Can you get 8mg where you are sir?"

    Me: "Well I've been on your site and entered my tel no. and it said I can get speeds upto 8mg. Your site is correct isn't it?"

    Pipex: "OK, I can sort that out for you Sir. I have to tell you that if you upgrade, that will start a brand new 12 month contract, everything else will remain the same, user id etc. you will only have 5 email accounts and no newsgroup access!"

    Me: "No problem. Happy with the one email account and the Pipex news server is crap so I don't use it anyway".

    Pipex: "There will be an extra £1.00 charge per month for paying by credit card."

    Me: "I'm paying by direct debit mate."

    Pipex: "Good stuff".

    1 minute pause while he sorted things.

    Pipex: "Ok sir, that's gone through. You may notice slow speeds, then fast speeds in the next 10 days and may even drop your connection. This is normal bla bla bla and a bit more waffle".

    Tht was yesterday morning. I went on my Pipex control panel this afternoon and notice that my service was changed from Solo1000 to Pipex Max and I now only have 5 email accounts. So I'm guessing everything is going ahead. That really was the basic telephone conversation I had.

    It sure does, thanks.

    The difference must be the phone call, as I prefer emails, which they obviously do not.

    For all that typing, have some karmaMax

    and the reason I've just been given for not being able to regrade is because I have a phone package with them which would have to be cancelled, returning me to BT, as "Pipex AnyTime" (8Mb broadband + calls package) does not actually exist, despite being advertised on their website. Load of bollox.

    Ah no problems my friend I'm on the MAX service and am synching at the full 8mbit. I only achieve 8mbit download speeds though in the quieter hours. Between 6 and midnight it is extremely variable although 300-400k/sec is common and satisfactory

    Just a shame their customer service and gaming online with them is poor.
