Thinking of getting one, anyone got one can give me advice on what to look for with them ?

Don't get a silver one.
Five doors are more practical.
Bog standard ally's look crap.
Never considered a 2.0 GTDI?
I have no experience about that car, but I like the reviews they have on new and used cars on the top gear site.
http://www.topgear.com/There's nothing in life as reliable as a Volkswagen - or so the ad goes, at any rate. While surveys show that reliability is, in fact, only average, when you choose a used Golf, you are buying into quality. Well-built and boasting excellent materials, Golfs have a reputation for lasting.
Always buy on condition, and always choose a model with more options, such as leather, bigger alloys or a sunroof. The Golf makes an expensive used buy compared to similar condition Astras or Focuses, and parts and servicing are more costly, but at least a Golf is never a problem to sell on.
The MkIV Golf is mature and eminently sensible. Most common is the 1.6 engine, but the best choice is the TDi PD diesel, available in various states of tune from 90bhp to 150bhp. Forget the off the boil 2.0 GTI - far better is the 1.8 Turbo GTI. V5 and V6 versions are very quick but rare and expensive. As a rule, engines are the Golf's strongest feature, up to 250,000 miles being common.
A service record is vital. Avoid cars with ABS or airbag warning lights that don't illuminate at all, or stay on. Engines occasionally misfire, so do a proper road test. A clacking sound that lasts more than 10 minutes indicates worn tappets. A heavy left pedal is a sure sign of a worn clutch and if the flywheel breaks, this could cost you ٟ,000 plus. As for brakes, a slightly 'slow' feel is normal and not necessarily something to reject a car for. Electrics are not a strong point so check everything carefully - a broken window winder costs about to fix.
The new MkV Golf launched in 2003, had a slow start in the trade, but is bigger, better to drive and has a new engine range, including 1.4 FSI, 1.6 FSI and 2.0 FSI petrols (the best choice), plus 1.9TDi and 2.0GT TDi diesels. Some areas of trim are of notably poorer quality than the MkIV, however.
“If I asked you to have sex with me, would the answer to that question be the same as the answer to this question?”
^^ deffo agree 1.9 GT TDI 150bhp or the 1.8 turbo all the way
I have the GTTDI130 and no problems with it, very quick and reliable....and just had it remapped to 185bhp so even bigger smile on my face
Would not go for the standard 2.0l Gti as I believe some of the models are 8valve?? Either the 1.8GTi turbo or the GTTDI 130/150 highly reccomended
IMac, MacBook Pro, Ipad 2, Iphone 4, Iphone 3GS....Oh and a PC or 2 knocking about
Ive got a 2.8 4Motion and its a good practical car (apart from fuel consumption). Plenty of space, decent sized boot. Very reliable. Ive had it 2 years and havent had anything go wrong.
My only minor problem with it is the suspension. Its a bit wallowy and bouncy. A set of coilovers are supposed to sort this but I havent had the funds to get them.
After about 6 months it starts looking like a bog standard
1.6 model in silver. I like the black but would prob go with
the white...they really stand out these days.
3 doors it is then.
But me personally, because of the whole being a dad
situation, I would opt for the five. In my younger days I would
have also went for the 3.
Yep, but just letting you know
Don't be dissing diesels. It's all about the torque, and the cash you hand over come filling time, which is noteably longer than a petrol.
I would say get a 1.8t if you wanna gti.
What Mk??
My Dad had a Mk4 2.0 8v gti.... It was painfully slow. Very disapointed.
You need a Mk1 with an Audi lump thrown in
If ur talking about the new one i would take a look at the focus ST instead. More powerful engine with bigger displacement. Looks are personal but i think its also better than the golf. It also sounds a hell of a lot better due to it being a 5 cylinder nd is a couple of k cheaper than the golf also.
If ur talking about the mk4 gti, i wouldnt bother its underpowered nd heavy.

I was touched by Jesus, so i had him arrested.
I have the MK5 GTI, its a good car, quick, handles very well and out classes the competion IMHO. I test drove the Astra VXR and Focus ST, but the GOLF won hands down for me.
The values are good, and do hold well. The only thing really i can slate it for is it being a bit too small. At the time i wanted a hot hatch, but i will be in a larger car again within a year i reckon.
Things that annoy you about a golf:
The folding mirrors dont always fold
The rear wiper has a mind of its own
You cant turn rear fogs on without the fronts. (or at least i have worked out how to do it)
The DSG can be a little sloppy at junction and "jerk" into gear.
I have DSG, but not with paddles, i wish it did.
Apart from the couple of negatives, i would highly recomend it, great fun and nippy.
You can't get a hot hatch with an auto gearbox! not even one as good as the DSG. `always get the manual version of these cars.

The new automatic boxes you get in german cars are amazing. I'd hate to go back to a manual. If you didn't know the new Porsche 911 turbo auto box is faster than the manual gearbox version....now thats saying something.
mrk 3 and 4s have a window motor problem make sure theyve been fixed.
i have a 96 colour concept ive had since new. only replaced window mot and clutch. fantastic car!
the black dog is all around us!
dont let it bite
