So are these devices essentially the same as a sky+ box or a telewest tv drive?

Yeah, but obviously you only get freeview. Most are easy to setup, and have one touch record.

I checked it out - the scarts are output only, so you probably could get Sky thru the co-ax but obviously only one channel at a time a la if you put the Sky through a VCR.

Info Re: Freeview Twin Tuner PVR with 80Gb HDD £65inc VAT

It looks like these are not capable of pausing live TV. So if you are after that function check all the specifications carefully.

dont really cre about recordin 2 channels or pausing live tv, just have it replace a vcr/dvd recorder, as long as u CAN get sky on it and record things off sky then thats all i mean really.

wonder if you can put a bigger hd in it aswell, hmmm

just an update, got mine delivered today, normal good dabs delivery, also the guy delivering it seemed proper interested as well as it was in it's own box with all the details shown etc

Because it was a refurb it was already set up so I plugged the scart + antenna in and away it went straight to channel 1, checked the library and there were 5 other shows still left on by the last owner lol

This does pause live TV and works a charm, the 7 day guide is quality compared to my last freeview box that didn't even have a 1 day epg.

Tested it out by telling it to record the simpsons and then went back to TV at 7pm and simpsons was waiting quite nicely

Picture in picture is pretty sweat too, now I can channel swap between ad breaks and I won't miss the start of the show.

all in all, it seems like a very nice deal, I couldn't see any damage to the unit and the firmware is 4.9 which is the newest official I think. I'll ignore the twin recording thing as I doubt I'll ever use that feature.

thanks to the original poster, K++
