i wouldnt know for sure, but im sure it happened on my mums laptop once, when the signal went dead/low. But when it goes low/dead now just says nosignal etc.
Just do a scan for viruses/spyware etc.... never know.
You mean Internet Explorer closes, dropping you back to just the Windows desktop? If so, check your AV software, see if it is "helpfully" closing down IE because it is detecting a threat (bogus or real) of some sort. Perhaps the new Wireless card drivers; some are a bit flaky (esp the cheapo USB dongle variety)? I'd suggest (if it stays up long enough) grabbing a copy of the Firefox web browser from http://en.www.mozilla.com/en/ If that works, then it's IE that's nadgered, if it breaks in the same way, then it's something more basic in Windows.
