    Default Advice please

Right, I'm looking to make a couple of simple posters for a night me and my mate organise. Thing is I only have word and paint to be able to manipulate the image I have and to add text. I don't want to just insert a text box on top of the image as it looks rubbish. I want the writing to be white or some other colour that's suitably visible in relation to the main background image. Is this feasible through word or paint or is there another programme I can download (for free) with which I could do that?

This is the image I'm looking to use:

You're going to face a couple of issues.

    1. The image above, have you got it in 300dpi? (dpi = dots per inch, if it's ripped from the web it'll only be 72dpi and not suitable for print work)

    2. The best software by a country mile for image manipulation is Adobe Photoshop and it is available from the usual places, but there's a learning curve so it may take you a while to get a result you're happy with.

Apparently it's 96 dpi. I'm not too worried if it lacks perfect definition to be honest but I had supposed that I'd be looking to rip Photoshop. I suppose I'll have to learn to use it at some stage. Was just wondering if there was anything simpler and smaller that would allow me to do a few simple things. I'll get to ripping right away.

It may sound shite, but when I do gigs I just knock up posters in MS PowerPoint!

Usually black and white jobs as they are cheaper to produce. Print them on bright coloured paper and stick them all over town!

For proper posters (like for inside the venue, or promo ones) I still use PowerPoint to arrange the poster, but PhotoShop all the way for messing with pics, graphics and logos.

Depends specifically what you're really after.

Thanks for the help, by the way gents. I've been messing about with photoshop but for the simple thing I needed doing paint.net did the job in the end.
