Default REQ - How To - Drilling holes in a wall!

    Alright guys,

Little embarrassing, but want a few diy hints, I'm borderline useless lol.

Anyway, I've got a couple of these http://www.stagebeat.co.uk/product.php?product_id=3449

They're guitar wall hangers. They came with the screws, which dont look too big, but as they came with em I assume they're the right ones. So...I just need a power drill, and some wall plugs right? Anyone got a link to a power drill and bits online they would recommend, I'm not too fussed about cordless. I'll buy a reasonably decent one with the intention of doing more diy later (yeah right...)

So I just mark out the holes with a level and away I go? How deep do the holes have to be for the wall plugs, just the right depth? Want to get this right, as I dont want my guitars coming crashing back down to the ground!

Is it a plasterboard wall? If so, just get a few of these, no drilling involved and more than adequate for hanging up a guitar

when you knock it does it sound hollow (plasterboard) or stone (masonary)?

I used to be scared to hang a picture, ive just built framework and divided the boy's bedroom in two - drywall, sockets, lights the lot. Read, read and read more.

Do you not know anyone that you can borrow one off? it seems a lot to buy a drill and bit to drill 3 holes.

If your near Bolton you can borrow my drill.

Tesco have a load of DIY stuff on offer at the moment if you really need to buy a drill. Battery ones are ok but your better spending more than less on battery drills buy a powered one for less if you dont plan using it often.

I almost bought a hilti drill but the company said no I ended up with a bosch one it does the job I'v made many holes in many walls and so far don't done any damage a mate of mine went through a live cable taking a travel agents power out, luckily the cableing guy was an ex-sparky so he got his big hammer out and smashed the wall to bits to get at the wire and fixed it all in about 10 minutes.

Cheers guys, 230 odd quid for a drill...albeit may be good but might be a waste on me! I might really start causing damage then, as I'll feel I owe to the drill to make holes in walls round the house all over the place!

i got bought a nice big JCB hammer drill, unfortunately its the kind of christmas present you start to get once you got your own place.

Anyways its great and has done the job many a time, next challenge is a false wall to hang my lcd on and hide all them nasty cables away!

    good luck

Don't bother and leave it under the bed or something.

Failing that, get down to Tescos and get a drill for £10, some plugs and go for it. Making sure there are no switches or sockets below or above where you are drilling.
