Maybe a silly question about PS3 DVD..

Obviously it plays Blu-Ray discs, but can it upscale normal DVD discs?

Isn't this a firmware thing rather than hardware - can it happen later?

Then again would Sony want to include upscale technology it's bound to be compared to the BlueRay side of things - better for them to be an SD Vs Blueray arguement?
