    PS2 Attention PS3 importers - Should I import one?

I've read the FAQ and the import machines don't seem to bad a deal.

I thought of going for an American machine just easier out of the box (I guess).

Can anybody foresee any disadvantages to importing?

It seems logical to me, shave a 100 sheets of the cost and order games online?

DF member who have the machine seem to be running the stuff they want to AND aren't mentioning any real problems?

There could be a problem in registering your UK cards to let you buy stuff off a US store, and if some games decide to restrict multiplay by region you'd only be able to play against US people

I picked up a HK 20GB PS3 from Dubai whilst on holiday there, cost me just £260 which is just a fair bit better than having to pay £425 for a UK 60GB PS3. It just meant I could afford one now.

It is a problem not being able to pay for stuff on the US PS Store, however I should imagine that once the PS Points scheme gets rolling, this may be an alternative way for us to pay for stuff without a credit card.

I have not regretted it yet, and besides, some of the great stuff just never makes it to the UK shores, like the excellent Einhander on the PS1. I would go for it myself.

one thing to take into consideration, if in say a years time you wanted to sell the PS3, you generally get alot less for it than you would a PAL one, i tried to sell my jap PS2 when the PS2 was still £300 here and i couldnt get more than 100 for it. It still living under my bed

I don't think that's the reason for the problem selling it on runner, I think they all support a number of languages anyway. The HK PS3 I have my hands on looks as English as fish and chips.

It would be the region locking thats an issue and the potential for any non compatibility with UK online services.

As for my JAP PS2, well I didn't sell it but, nah, it's an open forum, I have a UK console now ;-)

Would Sony honour the warranty on an imported PS3?

I can understand Sony not wanting Bulk Importers to make a quick buck and ship their consoles half way around the world. However if you went to the US as you might have a 2nd home there and brought your console to the UK to play on would sony still honour their warranty or would it be a case of....its a US console....go back to the US to get it repaired?

I'm just saying this as my Sony Vaio laptop comes with a worldwide warranty and just wondering if this is the case with their PS3.

no it hasn't! it's just that US and JAP PS3's use PS2 hardware, but the EU PS3's will be like the 360 and will only be emulating a PS2 using software and no actual PS2 hardware!

Yes at launch there will be even fewer PS1/PS2 games that work on the PS3, but like the 360, they will add more games over time with updates off the PS Store!

Ahh thanks for that. Thats better to know. Which should i get a 360 or a PS3? is the PS3 worth the price tag or going to be in a while as soon as the coding comes up to par? Or should i got for a 360

What gets my goat, is that if the PS2 hardware's removed from the PS3 in Europe, why hasn't the cost dropped?

    Funning Sony.

@zerofool2005: As for going for a PS3 or 360, just depends what type of games you want, if you preffered PS2 games over XBOX games then I would suggest a PS3, but right now, the PS3 code won't be up to par for about another year!

Personally I have a 360 and a Wii, and will get a PS3 when the price drops or GT:HD/GT5 comes out!

@eripmav: yes, they have removed the PS2 hardware, but these days PS2 hardware costs f*ck all to manufacture and implement! So it wont cut the manufacturing cost by more than about £50, and now that they have moved it to software (emulated), they will have to take the money they saved on adding PS2 hardware; and use it to implement the emulated PS2 software into the PS3!

And even if it works out cheaper to do it this way (emulated), they still loose money on each console, so keeping it at the same price of £425 means that they don't loose as much!

But to be fair; the 60GB PS3 costs $899 to manufacture, and the US get the 60GB model for $599, but we have to pay £425, which is $833.98, so we have to pay $234.98 (£119.71) more than the US!

you think that's bad - in Hong Kong its only $3750HK which is around £250 for the 60gb version - my father has picked me one up and he gets back next week with it!

How a system can be 250 in one place, 300 in another and 425 in another is madness - we are being ripped off by Sony in Europe big time!
