    PS3 PS3 from Hong Kong?

My father is about to go to Hong Kong on holiday, and will be able to bring me back a PS3 if I want one... £250 seems too good to pass over!

couple quick questions before I give him a definate answer:

Should he be able to get stock over there?
Would it work without a power adapter?
Would it be ok with any games bought over here?
Is it region A1 for movies - would this mean I could play US or Japan imports, but not uk?
Anything else I should be aware of?

    cheers

    1) Yes there should be stock available in Hong Kong.
    2) Yes. The internal power supply is unervisal. 110-240v. Just use a kettle lead with a 3 or 5 amp fuse or a PC plug.
    3) The PS3 is region free for games so games work fine from anywhere around the globe.
    4) I believe the HK model can only play US and JP Blu-Ray movies. But at the moment some UK movies are region free, but that will change in the future. PAL PS2 and PSone games also cant be played, or until a mod comes out.

    Hope it helped.

1 more question - my father has been told over there that it will only work on NTSC televisions, and that the warranty is only valid in HK and is not worldwide.

I understood that it would only play NTSC dvd movies from region 3 (HK) but for HD the PAL/NTSC issue was dead so a blue-ray disk from A1 region (US/Asia) would be fine? Will this be a problem on my Sammy tv over hdmi to 1080i?

Also - I had heard that it would only play games from NTSC region, so US/Asia again and not UK games? Anyone heard any confirmation on this.

Finally the warranty - can anyone confirm either way on this?

at £250 for the 60gb model I will still go for it - so long as I can play some games (pref UK, but US if need be) and US blue-ray movies but good to get confirmation on the above before comitting.

The warranty is not valid in the UK since Sony have made it illegal to import Playstation 3's before the official European launch on March 23rd. As for PS3 games they are all region-free. PS2 and PSone PAL games on the other hand will not work.

The PS3 runs fine on our UK HDTV's. Quite a few people on this forum have purchased one without any problems. You shouldnt have any difficulties with the PS3. They are very reliable unlike the Xbox 360.

Yes. So if anything goes wrong you have to send it back to Hong Kong.

So does that mean if it breaks AFTER the UK launch then its in warranty??

And as for region free games, its down to the individual developer (all Sony ones will be 100% region free tho...so thats stuff like GT5)! But most will probably leave it a region free!

I dont fully understand the warranty either Domain
As for games being region free I am pretty sure every single one will be. Just like with the PSP none to date have been region locked.

Fair enuff! And now you've mentioned the PSP is the same as the PS3 when it comes to region coding, its made me think about getting a US PS3, because i'm not fussed about PS1/PS2 games (thats what my PS2 is for!), and IF a region locked game I want does come out, then I can just import it from the US (will still cost less than £50 after delivery!), and the same with any Blu-Ray movies!

you cant compare the fact that the PSP is region free, handheld consoles are supposed to be used when travelling, ie overseas and also theres no video differences to affect compatability in a handheld either. I wouldnt be so confident.

Theres nothing stopping developers from making every 360 game region free, but not all do and for whatever reason they choose to do so, they can also apply to the PS3.

I do understand your point about the PSP, but the difference between the 360 and the PS3 region free is that Microsoft never highlighted this ability when they were anouncing the product. They didnt think it was an important addition.

Sony on the other hand have pointed out that they are the first console to be truly region free so they will put more pressure on the developer to make every game region free. And also with the additional space given by Blu-Ray multiple languages and sound files can be added to create a single global release. Plus with the move into HDTV there is no need for all this PAL-NTSC 60hz stuff that was a major issue.
