    Default Hong Kong help pls

Hey guys, I'm going to Hong Kong with the missus in the last week of April and need to start thinking about accomodation. Can anyone who's been advise me whereabouts to stay on the Island + areas to avoid.

Also plan to do some serious shopping. Bags, accesories, shoes etc.. for her and clothes, gadgets, electronics, camera gear for me. Are there any particular scams or shopping areas I need to be wary of?

    TIA

when i went to HK i found most accomadation to be roughly the same, ie very small and quite expensive (atleast compared to thailand and malaysia where i had also been.) When i stayed in thailand the bathroom there was bigger then the whole hotelroom in HK
I would plan to spend as little time in the hotel as possible, maybe spend a night over in macau, cheap beer and loads of casinos.

Thanks for that, I don't plan to spend too long in the hotel given the shopping and night life on offer, but I just want to be sure we're not slap bang in the middle of a red light area or a very rough part of town.

I dunno if this helps M8, but I've just booked this place for the end of May http://hongkong.eatonhotels.com/
It's on the Kowloon side at the top end of Nathan road, close to the Ladies and night markets. I booked using their earlybird program http://reservations.ihotelier.com/cr...ageid=1&taid=0 which gave us a 15% discount and free breccy We used the 15% to upgrade to a superior room with LCD TV etc.

Haha... GTi, like youre helping me with London, I can help you with Hong Kong!

Wan Chai is probably your cheapest option in my experience. My uncle lives in Wan Chai and I had to stay in a hotel for a couple of nights before he got home one year, there are quite a few nice (and small) hotels in the area that are cheap enough for HK.

Location wise its great too; the subway is amazing and there are plenty of subway stops all over the place. The nightlife is lively and there are plenty of happy hour offers to be had (its the only real way for a Brit to drink when in HK).

aye that is a good point from delmropha, the trains there are fantasticly efficiant, so no matter where you are staying, aslong as its near the train station you will be fine. I stayed near Wan Chai too and it wasnt anything flash but it was clean and comfortable.
The first hotel i tried to book tried to hike the price, so watch out for that, we were lucky as we found another hotel on the same street that didnt try to rip us off tho. This may have been due to it being just after the CNY celebrations.

Make sure you take your camera and tripod and head up victoria peak too, i missed out on that and i was gutted!

Thanks guys. The Eaton looks good, but even with a 20% discount its looking pretty pricey at 14,000HKD (£908) for 7 nights. I was hoping for something nearer to £60 - £70/nt ...

I paid £75 for a suite at the Ritz Carlton in Kuala Lumpur last summer

When we went to Hong Kong we stayed in the Sheraton so i guess my accomodation is OTT (it was a honeymoon), its a fantastic place though, the tram is wicked, also get on the ferry to the Buddha, the monestary is awesome. The night markets are funny as fook with allsorts of weird and wonderfull things, we were advised though to walk in the middle of the road very late at night, because you dont want to walk along the side of a building and be dragged up an alley.?? (although we never seen or heard any trouble at all). What out for the dodgy clothes on the markets, they are very good copies but copies all the same.

Fook me you scared the poo out of me with that price, so I re-checked the price, in May it's 765hkd for a double with 15% discount per night (£50 ish)

Damn thats a good price! entering my dates (April 19th to 26th) (7nts) I'm getting the more expensive rates.

In general though, HK is a lot pricier than I thought... I booked the flights with Oasis HK Airlines on a bit of a whim last year as they were only £250 rtn, but considering how much more spending money/accom etc.. we'll need I'm wondering whether we were not better off just going to Shanghi, Thailand or Malaysia.

out of all the places i visited HK was far the most expensive, it may be worth considering spending a few nights there when u land, then fly somewhere else localish (such as malaysia, thailand etc) before returning to HK for the flight home. Flights around asia are pretty cheap.
