Help sons ps2 some game read disc error

    HELP
My sons ps2 console plays most of his games but recently about 4 of of them dont work it comes saying read disc error. I went out and bought him a brand new game and even that said read disc error. He played one of the other games and that worked. I have been told that it may be something to do with the laser or dust. Can anybody help me with this matter please.

try opening up the console (remove all the screws, flip it over and remove the case), then remove the 4 small screws that hold the cover for the laser unit.

Blast it with compressed air, and put some isopropyl alcohol (nail varnish remover) onto a cotton bud and clean the lens with it, then use the other side of the cotton but to wipe it off, give another quick blast of compressed air and put it back together!

Done that with a mates console and sorted it out for them! Better (and cheaper) than using one of those lens cleaner CDs (BTW, I'm assuming you have one of the old original PS2's and not the slimline!).

If you have the slimline, then you can do the same, but you dont need to open it up, because you can access the laser by just opening the CD drive like you do when putting in a disc!

and BTW, welcome to DF mate!

Please post an intro in the intro section!

ONLY if you mess with the POTS and change the resistance!! NOT if you just clean it as I stated above m8!!

probably a little late for this sort of advice, but check the front grill isnt blocked with dust, if it is your laser wont be getting cooled as much as it should and this will shorten its life, it sounds like the damage is already done tho.

Giving it a clean is an option, but be careful when taking the machine to bits, if possible look for a guide.

Diane, do a search on the internet for cleaning fat ps'2s. I had exactly the same issue a month or so ago, and found a really nice pictoral guide to opening the PS2 for cleaning it. Mine has been perfect since, the amount of dust in there was unreal.
