Default Internal HDD Soft Error :(

My laptop has decided to be as reliable as ever & keeps crashing on me.

In summary, it ran out of power one night and powered off. Upon some fresh juice and a boot it'd lost my Documents and Settings folder, so on boot, it created a dup account and it was like a new windows install. I ran chkdisk and did a fragment to see if it had bad sectors, it seemed ok and no error from either came out.

Now it keeps BSOD'ing with Internal HDD soft errors. this is spontainious and unrelated to tasks, i.e. i wass just listning to a cd and on df and it crapped out. it failed to recognise the hdd on several boots and after taking it out and reinstalling the hd it now is alive again.

Dell lappy, no warranty left and little desire to buy a new hd.

any tools / suggestions to get things checked out, on what might be, a limited, randomly lost, las time on my laptop?

run a chkdsk on the machine first of all.

chances are it screwed up the profile - your my documents are probably still there - just under your old profile. try searching your machine for a document with a name you know was there.

Power on in to Diag mode to do this

FN-Power will run some tests on your hardware and also will test your Hard drive spinn up time if they pass alright run the HDD diags or IDE diags these will bring back a error code. let me know what that error is and will let you know if there is a way to recover from it.

let me know what that error code is and PM me your Service tag and i will let you know how much it will be for a new one if required or advise you on some other options.

    cheers

currently miles away from home but when I am back there I'll do some tests, as well as boot up hirens and see what tests I can do. I'm sure the HDD is just fragged and I need a new one. Should've just taken advantage of Neo's 100GB 2.5inch ones a while back ah well.
