Xbox 360 reciently flashed drive suddenly not spinning disks

my mate picked up a 360 and bought it to me still sealed, he says he got it through a mate who worked for a mobile company, so im not sure if its fully legit.

When i cut the seals on the box, i noticed it had been resealed 3 times alreeady, so im wondering if it was a recon.

anyway, he's been running it a few week and suddenly just doesnt read any disks, theres no noise of the disk spinning from the drive at all. Even dvd films do nothing in the drive.

Its 59DJ drive, anyone got any ideas?

I don't think its a laser problem, had this problem before. Basically its the motor that spins the DVD thats not working. If your brave enough to take off the top case and power on the XBOX 360, you'll notice that the laser will go up and down, but because the disc is not spinning it will just stop reading after 30 secs.

Only problem is that its not so easy to replace the motor and just for ease of mind you might as well get another drive. Well thats what I ended up doing.

check the seal on the dvd drive to see if its been replaced or removed first.

I've come across a few new drives that have done this, so I wouldn't be surprised if the Drive is brand new. Best thing to do is take it back to where he got it from and get an exchange.

Like Pizza Man said since its brand new and under warranty, just take advantage of it as pissing about with drive replacements should be a last resort.

my initial thought was to just return it, but the guys methods of obtaining the machine are suss to say the least. Il have to see what he says.

If he cant return it, is it possible to replace the whole dvd drive unit?

if it's a bit suss...swap the drive with a box that you have the receipt for and return that
You see, TheThingIs, eventually you'll be all right!

AFAIK as long as you can get the key from the knackered drive you can put it into the new one to marry it to the existing mobo so it will work.

As above though, if possible get an exchange.
If you have or know someone who has a recent receipt from Game, Gamestation, Tsco whatever - use that, I`ve replaced a few boxes with the same receipt now - last one I did Game even threw in a free pad to say sorry as its the 3rd box I`ve had thats given me ring of death - good old DVD power cables eh

told the guy to ring MS but theyre saying with no reciept they wont do shit, i think my best option would be to try get a reciept of someone thats bought one reciently and tell him to take it back to the store.

why would M$ need your receipt.. seems a bit odd. all they ask for is the serial number and date of purchase and that's it.
