PlayStation 3 becomes UK's fastest-selling home console

Chart-Track estimates 165,000 units sold in two days

Chart-Track has confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that UK consumers snapped up 165,000 PlayStation 3 units in the two days following the console's launch.

That makes PS3 the fastest-selling home console in history, beating the Wii - which shifted 105,000 units during its launch weekend - and Xbox 360, with 70,000 sold.

Both Nintendo and Microsoft struggled to meet demand with their consoles, leading to stock shortages - but Sony previously stated that the UK would get around 220,000 of the 1 million PS3 units allocated to Europe for launch.

Overall, the PlayStation 3 is the second fastest-selling piece of games hardware in history. That record still belongs to PlayStation Portable, with 185,000 units sold during the handheld's launch weekend.

PlayStation 3 launched in Europe on Friday, priced at GBP 425 / EUR 599 for the 60GB model.

I'm not so sure about those stats, at my trusty Argos we've got 7 or 8 still in stock since release, and we've only sold about 3. Plus on the first day a mate of mine got his he had to bring it back because it was faulty lol.

I know, after speaking with argos cust service, that crap loads have been returned, she said ' i dont know whats going on, maybe everyone has had second thoughts about the price'. Dint wanna say the Ebay crisis the sellars are in there going for £380 regularly now

The figures are probably quite accurate. However, it will be interesting to see what the take-up is after the initial rush, as all the fan boys have got theirs now, same as with the PSP, and now its a matter for Sony to try and attract the casual buyer, and IMO when you compare it to the 360 there's no comparison. The 360 is cheaper, there's more games, and the games that are there are online. The fanboys have had their weekend, now its back to the gamers.

I was up in scotland for the weekend and every shop I looked in had plenty of stock - no shortages at all - and nobody buying them either.

Personally I wouldn't have one given - my old Xbox 1 still does all the games I'm bothered about - BUT of course if the price of the 360 drops a bit now more due to PS3 competition then I'll be nipping out for a 360

the uk was getting 300k units, but i think it dropped to 240k, of which 2/3rds were preordered (atleast according to Game). This kinda tallys in with the number there. It doesnt really mean anything since the 2 comparisons were both sold out. The fact the PSP was previously the best seller also shows u that its a pretty pointless statistic, even if true.
Im surprised that many peole were happy to spend the best part of 500 tho.

Yeah that`s right Ace, it`s units sold to shops who then sell onto customers, so it could be they sold 1m in sales, but 900k of them are in warehouses unsold to us lot.

this definately does not count consoles returned which I reckon was at least half of that number. I was chatting to a guy the other day who returned or cancelled 6 machines. I cancelled 3 machines and other friends cancelled many more.

i got a ps3 last friday,i must admit,it blows the 360 apart,what the ps3 can do that the 360 CANT.

i can surf the net on my ps3,I CANT ON THE 360,i get free internet with my ps3,I HAVE TO PAY FOR LIVE,i have no restrictions on my ps3 and all my sony mobile and blue tooth work fine with my ps3,NO MOBILE WORKS WITH 360-NO DIGI STUFF.

only one good thing for 360 is the price,YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR,270 QUID WAS COOL,but the ps3 has far more gear inside than any 360 can handle,

hmdi and not there yet for 360,they wont us to buy a new model just to have hdmi,
i think my 360 will become another dreamcast now,and fade away.

if you ever had a sony console i bet you are all itching to get one,yeh sure the price does put a lot of ppl off and its anot a toy at 429.99.
BUT WORTH EVERY PENNY.
