    Info Depression

    Hi Guys

After an argument out of nowhere today with the wife and me going for a drive I did some thinking. Have come to the conclusion that after a whole lot of shit happening in the past 14 months of my life I may have Depression.
I have so far taken 3 online test's all came back with the same result in different wordings.
They all point towards me having moderate to severe depression. I am obviously going to go see the doc as soon as I can.

Dont actually know why I am sharing this on here as no doubt someone or another will come along and tell me get a grip and get over it. However I aint here for sympathy just looking for somewhere to vent so thats it.

    Cheers guys

    Hi mate

I shall be surprised if anybody tells you to get a grip....depression can be a severe and dilapidating condition. Few people realise the physical effects it can have until they actually experience it themselves.

Get yourself to the docs mate, and maybe see if you can get yourself some counselling, or such like.

Positive mental action sorted me out last year. Takes a while, but once you get through the initial steps of challenging your thoughts and reversing them, you'll be laughing before you know it.

I feel better before. Afterwards I just feel dirty and ashamed...

Jaygo, hope things get better, I'm sure they will. Just make sure you see a doctor so someone else knows/can help.

I've suffered from depression, and the above point is quite valid, but not for all people.

I tried counsellng, which didn't work, fluoxetine (prozac), which didn't work, and finally a career change... Which worked wonders.

If one treatment doesn't work for you, there are always alternatives. You could start by taking a daily supplement of St Johns Wort, which contains the same active ingredient as fluoxetine, albeit in a much smaller dose.

The other things which is worth mention is exercise - like Laz said above, the lack of serotonin is seriously debilitating, so exercise will naturally replace this.

Let us know what you decide and how everything goes.

Nail has been hit on the head in here regarding your lack of serotonin - the stuff the docs give you can fuck you up even more!

Might be worth checking out something from Holland and Barrett et al called 5-HTP - they sell it in caps form - pick up some of those and give it a week or two and see how you feel then. There are many factors nowadays such as diet which can cause serotonin depletion, it's just a chemical imbalance in the brain, and the 5-HTP helps this.

A lot of people I know swear by the stuff.

Things might seem bad but there is almost ALWAYS a light at the end of the tunnel so always bear that in mind.

Personally over the years I've had ups and major downs as everyone has. Personal losses, work, they can all cause some serious grief, but when the imbalance is sorted your outlook soon starts to lift!

OK Guys just wanna say thanks to you all for your chat, thoughts and ideas.
With regards to the do something you would never normally do idea before this had came out with the depression I am already signed up to do a 200meter Zip slide and the kicker is I am shit scared of heights.

Also my sister in law this year cycled London to Paris for Marie Curie cancer and when she came back I suggested why not do Kilamanjaro next year so I reckon I may be doing that too.

As for a docs appointment will be there Tuesday morning to get the Professional opinion and see what he has to say.

With regards to work and myself I am not sure where I stand at the moment do I tell my Boss, BDM (business Development Manager) and Exec Chef when I return to work tomorrow or wait till I have seen the doc.

But once again rambling but venting here is something I have never had a problem with before and reckon never will in the years to come.

    Thanks

    Again fellas

Best advice ever, the combination of exercise and being alone whilst doing something is brilliant. Studies have even shown that pure exercise is equally as effective as medicine for milder depression, and although I've never been depressed I definitely think walking up a mountain is the best thing to do when feeling a bit under the weather.

I'd resist the temptation to solve it with alcohol, I know personally I feel really depressed the day after heavy drinking. It passes by about the following day, but if anything is wrong at all it feels a hundred times worse the day after a session. Of course you could be different, and you'll know that from drinking in the past. If you currently drink alcohol every day I think stopping that would be a good thing to think about.

Depression is the most commonly diagnosed condition in GPs surgeries in the UK currently.

Depression is not a weakness, but a sign you`ve been strong for too long.

I`ve suffered with it for years but I have always used PMA to overcome it. I have felt it creeping back onto me and each time PMA. Recently though it has been getting worse so the girlfriend took me to the doctors. They prescribed Citalopram which seems to have cleared my head up a bit...and I`ve lost 4 pound from not drinking too

one of the other things to try is take up a sport like boxing.

one of the lads from work had just lost his wife, kids and house. (one very depressed chap)

i took him down the gym to meet the lads an he now goes down every other day.
Hes even started it competitvly and has his first fight soon.

I think the feeling of being in a team, great friends, fitness and staying of the beer have all contributed to him coming out of the dark whole.

hope you feel better soon matey

Ive been down for the last couple of months with depression due to the divorce and all. But you just have to soldier on through. Get your close friends and family around you and they will be there to help out

Do not start going on the anti depress tabs. they didnt work for me and the docs wanted to give me stronger ones. I know what these can do to a person as my mum was on them for someting minor, she ended up taking them for the rest of her life.

Give me a call anytime matey. You got my MSN and Mobile. I have been there and came out the other side on a few times.

Hope you get sorted matey. Sometime next year im gonna elope with the new GF and get married up there. So might give you a shout and a meet
