    Default N95 GPS theory **UPDATED*

I mentioned in another thread that I am waiting for a code from O2/onestopphoneshop to download and presumably update a 3 year Navigation bundle. There is an option to buy the services in lengths form 7 days upwards in the "extra services" and this will presumably enable the map download, obviosly best done by wifi. I reckon that if not subscribed the phone will, if allowed in network settings, download the maps on a "when needed" basis wiith the data charges being added added pro rata, it seems to make sense, buy upfront and pay less. Nobody in the online or high street stores seems to know as yet but no surprise there. What do you think folks, make sense or am I just listening to a very old penny drop which you've all heard before?

**Check my last post in this thread for more info*

If you bought the phone from O2 it should have come with a 1GB card with the UK maps already on. If I was going to use it another country, I would usb it to my PC and use the smart2go (?) map installer program - stuff having to pay mobile data rates!

I've added a pic of the free bundle I've got, this is avalable for purchase on the N95 in the GPS application, it is time based with the 3 year pack at about £47.95 (from memory) it'll give people an idea of what's available. It seems to make it possible to use a BT GPS receiver too so must add it as a menui item.

yeah but the built in gps application is so bad it's not worth the bother.

Soon as TomTom gets patched to work on Symbian with built in GPS then there will be no need to bother with the pile of shite "Maps" program thats built in.

Most of all I hate the fact that there's no option to set the direction of travel to the top of the screen (a basic requirement imho for any gps navigation program)

I had a faulty phone replaced and sold the piece of crap as soon as it arrived, you need to chase them for the code, it sometimes gets to the retailer but not the phone although Nokia have a dedicated line set up now, IF you can get through. I now have the latest firmware on my W950 and p990, works a treat. Installed tomtom on both.

This is not exclusive to Nokia N95, but check out www.amazegps.com.
It's a free service with Google Maps and turn-by-turn navigation - all free!

Works on all Java phones. I haven't had the chance to try it out yet, my new phone doesn't come with built-in GPS, but if any of you try it out - do tell!

Yeah - it's a buggy piece of crap and I've removed it from my phone.
