    Default Update N95 / N95 8GB (or any Nokia) To Unbranded Firmware - 01/05/09

    Hello,

As you might know, Nokia Software Update lets you upgrade your phone's firmware, but it will keep your operator's personalization (and revert to it, even if you flashed the phone to a non-branded firmware with Phoenix before).

ExpertGSM published a new method on a french site (www.forummobiles.com) in order to "trick" NSU so that the phone's firmware will be upgraded with the latest original Nokia firmware.

Here is the translation I've done for this tutorial - just keep in mind that you have to correctly identify (based on a firmware file for your BB5 phone) the correct product code for your country and phone model.

    FYI N95 UK/EURO1 Code is 0536062

Here’s a tutorial that will teach you how to update your phone’s firmware to a Nokia original version (without your operator’s personalization) with NSU (Nokia Software Update – the official Nokia program).

NSU reads the product code of your phone and it searches its database for a newer version of the corresponding firmware in order to upgrade it. This is why you will need to change the product code of your phone into a non-branded product code, before running NSU.

Download the « NSS » software in order to change the phone’s product code. This is a shareware program that you can download on the site of its author here : http://www.b-phreaks.co.uk/index.php?main_page=page_2

And finally, download NSU here: http://nds1.nokia.com/files/support/...erSetup_en.exe

    NOW WE CAN BEGIN:
Install NSS (as Virtual USB Device)
    Install NSU
Connect your phone and wait for Windows to install the drivers.
Open NSS and click on “Scan for new device” on the right-upper part of the window
Click on the icon « Phone info »
    Click on “Scan”
As you can see, now you can change the product code (on the right of the « phone info » window of NSS). For a Nokia N95, type the product code 0536062 (this is the product code for UK!) and then mark the case “Enable”.
Now press “Write”, and your phone’s product code will be changed (you might think that nothing happened, because the phone is still in normal mode, and the changing of the product code only takes a couple of seconds, but don’t worry, the product code changed !).
Close NSS and you can proceed now with the NSU flashing.
When the flashing with NSU is over, start-up your phone and you’ll have the pleasant surprise that your phone’s firmware is the latest Nokia non-branded firmware in date!

    Edit: NSS Updated to 1.0.38.14 (18thJuly 2008)

i used the above method to flash my N73 to the N73 Music Edition, and it works spot on.

will wait for an official update on the Nokia site and use this method to flash the Voda N95,

can anyone unlock this or get me a code please ?

    Hi mate,

I have an N73 and would like to update the firmware cos its playing up all the time.

Mines on O2 at the moment. What code did u change the product code too?

Whats the advantage of changing it to the music edition?

    Cheers

Well felt a bit brave today & installed the software onto my PC - used the first programme - NSS & found my current Production Code is - 0523987 (I'm on Orange) - so have left it like this for now & will make sure I have got everything backed up on the phone. I have flashed my phone nearly a year ago using the Phoenix & other programmes so at the moment it is unbranded.

Having bluetooth problems now - was fine before the upgrade. Is there an easy way to downgrade the firmware ?

Downgrade is possoble via a JAF service box (and poss a few others now) m8. But BB5 handsets cannot be downgraded via the online client.

Hopefully will get time & feel brave enough this weekend - have to make sure I've got it all backed up first. Will also have to find out what the latest software version is - I've got an unbranded V5.0616.2.0.3 - 24-04-06
Any idea what is the difference between the music & the non music edition (very rarely ever use the phone for MP3s) & would I be better with the non music version ?
