Default Are you having trouble copying some newer DVDs? READ IN

Well after getting Peep Show Series 3 and trying to back it up I encountered a lot of problems...

The latest version of DVDshrink along with latest AnyDVD wouldn't read the disc. I t would start then an error would appear. So off I go and learn about how some new DVDs are using a new protection whereby the producer adds bad sectors to the disc to make it unreadable to such applications.

So here is a brief tut on how to copy them, I won't go into the settings details as the defaults suffice and you can use some common sense too

    1. Download Ripit4me (1.7.1.0 is current latest version)
    2. Download DVD Decrypter (3.5.4.0 final version )
    3. Download IMGburn (optional) (2.3.2.0 current version)
    4. Download DVDshrink (3.2.0.15 current version)
    5. Install items 2, 3, and 4 BEFORE you run ripit4me
    6. Once all installed ok run Ripit4me
    7. In Settings menu goto preferences and setup options and folders as you see fit
    8. Use Wizard or 1-click mode
    9. Let it do its thing, when DVD Decrypter loads up click the big button to begin the rip
    10. If DVD Decrypter asks if you want it to try and decode keys (or something similar) click No to all, if this later results in a unplayable DVD click Yes to all.
    11. Once ripped DVD Shrink will load up, set the usual settings removing what you feel you don't need, if the resulting DVD is still too large don't worry!
    12. Once DVD Shrink has finished you can reload the resulting files into DVD Shrink and compress again if the previous compression wasn't enough to fit to DVD-/+r.
    13. If you have Alcohol 120% or another virtual drive mount the image to test it
    14. Use IMGBurn (or DVD Decrypter) to burn the folder or image to disc
    15. Voila, you should be done!

    Notes:
If using a Sony DVD put the DVD in the drive after step 8 or you may face problems.

    Explanation:
Ripit4me runs a scan which produces a file indexing the bad sectors on the disc. This file is then loaded into DVDDecrypter automatically and tells DVDDecrypter what to ignore or how to rip the files. This is the only stage which will be new to most of you as the following stages are just what you would normally do.

Hope this helps, please post any problems or if I missed any steps as I didn't use it whilst writing this.

    Enjoy

    So far worked with:
    Peep Show: Series 3
    Cars
    Baby Einstein
    Pursuit Of Happiness
Chubby browns "he good the bad & the fat bastard live" newest 2007 nationwide tour

    Hi Evil

I'd noticed this problem recently and couldn't work out what the hell was going on. Like you say, I was getting a message in CloneDVD saying bad indexing descriptors or something.

I'll give your method a try and let you know how I get on.

edit: It's worked. Fantastic post. This should be a sticky, no question about it.
edit part 2 : discs fixed with this method: Pixar "Cars" and Baby Einstein(!)

Glad to hear it worked mate, can you edit your post to say what the disc was? Just interested in seeing affected titles.

    Cheers

yeah I've had a few like this now too, only on $ony discs so far...

I use dvdfab. It's very similar to dvd decrypter, it works for what I need it to do.

Also you can use an xbox360 dvdrom with a connectivity kit in mode b to rip dvd's with as well, I found that out purely by accident. Handy to know through

    Hi,

I'm having similar problems with "The Pursuit Of Happyness" (another Sony release). The original disc has 70 some empty VOB files at the end of the disc. I was able to decrypt using DVDFab Decrypter, but when I ran it through DVD95Copy, I was getting error messages when it was trying to get rid of the empty files. I'll try Evil's method, and see how it works. Thanks mates.

Remember the note I made about Sony DVDs mate, should work a treat but would be interesting to know if Sony have beaten this method on their very latest discs.

    Hi again,

This method worked on "The Pursuit Of Happyness", but the burned copy freezes at the end of the credits.
Is there anything else that could be done to eliminate this problem?

    Thanks,
    Bergy

Nothing comes straight to mind, but does it matter that much? Maybe try getting A-ray scanner to determine if there is any additional protection and reading up about it?

Might even be a faulty convert as it would be strange for the height of their copy protection to freeze after you have pirated all their work

    Hi all,

Just an update on "Pursuit of Happyness". I must have screwed-up the first time I tried this method. Tried it again, and it worked fine.

Thanks again for the info, evilsatan.

I am trying this myself with Pursuit of happyness now.

Can a mod please make this a sticky? It is different from all other guides and it will become more and more useful in time as this extra copy protection becomes more widespread. Reported it to bring this to your attention

I've had a few problems myself with the fabled "Sony RED" dvd's. Believe it or not, there are some out there that believe any original film, recorded on a Sony RED, gets an electronic tag on it if you try and copy it. Hence, when you take it back to Blockbusters etc, they instantly know you've tried to copy it and will bring the full arm of the law to bear.
    W H A T A L O A D O F B O L L O C K S !.

For my sins I use DVD FAB. absolutely superb. It drops the Audio/Video files wherever you want and then allows you to either recode using itself, or pull them into DVD shrink for recode and burn using nero.
What I do like about DVD fab is that it allows you to remove the menus etc if need be. Especially good for those originals squashed onto a standard DVD, but too big to just decrypt and rip

Can DVDFab handle and successfully rip these protected films though? I searched everywhere at the time and this lengthy process is the only method I found.

Casino Royale for example is a Sony RED.
    DVD shrink wouldn't touch it
DVD fab did the business though.
Similarly "Madagascar" - which was a kid's animation film was a bugger to copy with anything bar DVD FAb.

this has sorted "reign over me" another sony disk, so it looks like most of the people out there with dvd shrink wont be ripping alot of stuff with the above setup.

    many thanks.
