    Default reformatting

    Hi all,

My brothers troublesome pc needs wiping and starting over, so I've got my stuff to do it, and booting xp from cd to reformat and install, but for some reason my keyboard won't work to be able to start the process? Tried 2 different usb keyboards (usb is enabled in bios) and tried them with a ps2 converter as well, but it won't boot at all with that in, saying keyboard error.

I've tried resetting bios to defaults, and a few other bios things but can't get anywhere. Any ideas anyone? There is an option in bios for "keyboardless operation" but dunno how tha'd work??

    TIA,
    Russbeer

When you say USB is enabled in the BIOS, do you mean that "USB Legacy Support" is enabled?

As for the USB to PS2 convertors, they generally only tend to work if the convertor came supplied with the keyboard.

    i wouldn do that m8...

it can work if the parts in the pc are the same but otherwise it will either not work vey well or just fail to boot..because of the diff motherboard chipsets..

i keep a ps2 keyboard hanging round for such events...

A PS2 keyboard will be fine.

When you introduce the USB keyboard, it can take up to 1 minute for Windows to find it and install the correct drivers during the start up sequence.
Needless to say, during this period the USB keyboard will not work (so you won't be able to login immediately if you have to enter a password at the welcome screen).

Ok, dunno why i'm posting this coz i'm gonna get flamed and shamed, but i've solved the problem.

My usb to ps2 converter came with my microsoft mouse, and i attached it to the keyboard usb, due to the ps2 converter being green, i plugged it in the green ps2 socket. Thats when at boot it showed a keyboard error. Anyone else see the problem? It took me 3 days to spot that the purple ps2 socket is for the keyboard, and the green for the mouse.

Go on y'all, say it... Fuckin n00b!!

i keep a really old ps2 kb around just for installs, they always seem to be more reliable for xp and earlier OS's

Not sure if vista is any better as I havent had the pleasure but i suspect its as much down to the mobo and bios as it is the OS when installing fresh
