    Help daughters laptop?

right guys wounder if anyone can help me please.

the problem is i just bought a second hand laptop for her birthday 2 weeks ago and since weve had it Everytime you run 2 or more programmes on it it shuts off without warning and reboots.ie an example yesterday i had broadband turned on just for her laptop and when you have internet explora open and running on its own its fine but then if she logs into msn messenger it turns off straight away and re-boots.

ive tryed the old trick of placeing it on an old wire rack to keep it up in the air to allow it to cool and that didnt help, ive looked into the vents and fan and there all clear from dust and crap, you can here the fan running so thats ok aswell.

the problem ive got now is shes getting upset as this happens all the time and the prev owner is the other side of the country from me plus he keeps saying it was fine when he had it and hed have anything upto 8 programes running at the sametime with no problems?

have you tried going into the bios and checking the settings, maybe slow it down a little to rule out cpu or memory issues. you could also use something like system mechanic to check for windows/registry probs as well.
EDIT: btw pmsl at the sig

What OS are you running on it?

Does it turn off if you leave it in BIOS for an hour or 2?

right then last time lol late last night i tryed a diff hard drive in this laptop.formatted it fine and started to install xp on it. As soon as the install finished i was hit again by this blue wall of death but this time it stayed up on the screen so i could write down the error codes which are.

    Tech Information :

    STOP: 0x00000001(0x85b1b856,0x00000002,0x00000000,0xf77dd3e0)
    SISNICXP.SYS: Address f77dd3e0 Base at f77d8000,datestamp 43a672bb

right can anyone point me in the right direction so i can find out what all this means please?

SISNICXP.SYS is an SIS network driver. Can you disable the NIC in BIOS and try it? The last time I got stop errors on a PC I fixed it by updating the BIOS.

right ive disabled that also tryed a updated driver also updated my mother board, sound and graffic drivers aswell but still get this problem, ive also run a programme to check my ram for errors but that came back all fine.

But the area around where the ram is(underneith the laptop) is very very hot so im woundering if this is the root of my problem and if so how can i fix this?

Do you get the problem if you just switch the laptop on and do not use any programmes, many of the laptop problems I have had in the past have been heat related, if you can have the laptop on for 30 mins say without doing anything then this suggests it is not likely to be heat related, have you noticed it cuts more quickly just after it has rebooted after cutting out i.e. if it is warm? Another useful piece of software is Sis Sandra as you can do benchmarks of individual components, to try to see if it cuts out while benchmarking any particular component e.g when doing a network test. Out of interest how much ram is installed, (trying to work out if extra ram has been installed which may be conflicting with original chip) I have had similar problem on Desktops if different speed ram chips are installed.

if i leave the laptop alone without useing any programes it reboots itself around the 20-30 mins mark as for the ram i was told it had 512 before i bought it but on the ram stick it had a lable saying 256 mb but if i go into system info it says 448 mb of ram?

sometimes the paste on the cpu dries and cracks and it useless may need new paste.

When you say you did a full re-install, did you boot up normally and put in the xp cd and run it, or did you boot from the cd and install from there?
