    Question Fair Usage Policies...what's fair?!

I've just been warned by my ISP Demon that I've downloaded nearly 50GB in the last 30 days, and if I go over 50GB they will cap my download speed to 128kb. Obviously I'm not happy about this, and I'm just wondering if I cancel and sign up with somebody else - what limits do other ISPs impose, in terms of GB per month? Can anyone advise?

I was in your exact position except I did go over 50GB several times on Demaon and that capped me to 128kb/s which pissed me off to say the least. Especially as for the first 7-8 months they didn't care about downloads and inposed the fair usage policy without warning by email or letter.

I waited until my contract had expired (Demon tie you in with a 12 month contract which they don't seem to publicise well either ) then moved over to UKSFN.org. Same price as Demon (£19.99/month for 8MB line) free 8 static IPs, 300GB off peak downloads and 30GB on peak downloads.

Only problem with UKFSN is on peak times the speed is as it sould be or near what it should be, but offpeak the speed seems to be 200-250kb/s on a 7MB line. That is annoying me but for the download quota you can't fault it!

im on a forum that people moan like mad about capping. they are complaining that they are getting stuffed at 300 gig a mth. to me this is absolute madness (and greed)

this is the opposite. 50 gig is not (imo and depending on what your doing) not that much.

i have a cap of 100 gig and believe me it meets my needs 100%. it is also unlimited at late night early morning.

if your happy with an isp the stay as you are. if not you need to move. i suggest you move as you can get alot better service than 50 a mth.

im STILL with f2s. people have slagged them in the past but if they meet needs then why move? admit its only 2m speed but my ftp is only 2m.

you will always get threads like this but 50 is no good imho.

hope this helps for what its worth.

I`m with UKFSN, another Entanet reseller who seems pretty good is ADSL24,there`s plenty of other re-sellers of Entanet, but in fairness its only really the extra bits they throw in that may make a differance.

What's your download speed? That would play a very large part in what's 'fair' or not.

I've been on a FUP for years, it aint a big bind tbh, it was in the early days when they were turning the screw to the max but now it's manageable.

If your speed is 8 Megabits, that's pretty much 1 Megabyte a second.

    50 Gigabytes is 50,000 Megabytes

50,000 seconds is 833.33 Minutes, or 13.88 hours.

In 30 days there are 720 hours.

This means that you've used about 2% of your full download potential over 30 days, seems pretty reasonable to me. If you wanted to you could have downloaded 2,592 gigs, now that would be unreasonable.

i'm with plus net and peak times are capped at 15gb a month but off peak is un-restricted, so I just schedule all my downloads after midnight and it's all hunky dorey. as I've never gone over 150gb in one month anyway I think that its great value for just over 20 quid.

if I need to grab anything during the day speeds are still pretty good.
