Help Land Rover Freelander yes or no?

Hi guys, I have an Citroen Synergie 8 seater but it won't pull our new caravan so need something that will. I can't afford to run a big 4x4 and was looking at the Freelander as it's only a 1.8 and reasonable to gallon same as mine, does anybody have any views good or bad, it would be around a 2000 plate LWB diesel....... cheers Morphias

i think the 1.8 is the k series from rover then there are head gasket issues, the 2.0 deisel is bmw m47 unit and is pretty sound.

Personally I would stay away from the 1.8's because of the somment above. I have heard that the latter ones are not as bad but I wouldn't trust them.

They are dung, total dung, underpowered, overweight dung. Built for the wannabe 4x4 driver market and don't even do that well, they break down even if they have never been off road and have never been put under any kind of terrain they were supposedly built for. I've never heard anything good about them, not once, every comment is negative.

I AM biased tho, cos I absolutely hate british motor engineering, I'm ashamed to be british as far as our motor engineering is concerned, we suck.

for me they are a great looking 4x4.
engine wise cant comment really, but i do know the 1.8 is flat.

That depends on the weight of the caravan and how many passengers you'll have while your towing. Nothing in the rule book says you need any kinda 4x4 to tow a caravan.

Wow lol will be too expensive for me though, and the towing weight needs to pull 1500kg and we will be only carrying 2 adults and 2 children........ Was toying with the idea of a diesel Mondeo they have 1700kg kerb weight so should be ample but wanted a bit more space in the car.........

we used an octavia 1.9 tdi to tow things (22ft yacht, loaded box trailer, not at the same time of course) up to scotland and back and never had any problems with it. it was the 110bhp version but you can get a 130bhp version as well.comfortable to drive (elegance) and the mileage was 40-45 and around 55 without a load.

The only model to go for is the TD4.

K series had problems with the head, as mentioned above and even when repaired theysoon go again.

When they changed from the old diesel engine to the TD4, they modified the 4x4 system. Adjusting the bias etc because the old ones used to get to about 60/70k then give up(this is just as if not more common than the K series problem).

Oh, and they're not as bad as what people make out.

The K was not a bad engine, but people say it wasn't right to go to 1.8 and it's not good for a heavy car. The old Rover 1.4 used to fly!

incorrect anti freeze was a big killer on this engine as it blocked the cooling channels in the head but i must admit the 1.4 did go well as i had a metro 1.4 gti with this engine .

K series engines were rubbish, utter rubbish. Very few didn't go through a head gasket, and what makes them worst of all is that Rover is yet to admit there was a problem, even with the sheer amount of complaints and volume of evidence. Would you buy a car from a manufacturer that won't admit a fault, I wouldn't.
