Help Small compact digital camera full of features needed

If people could offer some advice I would be very grateful

I enjoy my old SLR cameras but have not sued them for some time. SO I thought to see if I want to take the plunge and get a super SLR Digital camera I might go for a compact one and see if I pic it up again.

This has partly been prompted by how far these have come. I friend has a small digital camera and took a shot one night that made the lights go in the lines (you can see I am clearly up on all the technical terms). He also showed me a whole host of neat little features.

I am not sure on price. If you would be so kind as to perhaps point out a midrange one and a high range one in terms of price.

So I am looking for a decent small digital camera with the ability to change camera film speed features (I guess) with the ability to take black and white (sorry if this is a standard feature). Do any compact digital cameras come with the ability to take a shot with the cat eye effect? Also looking for a good macro.

Looking to follow up on suggestions from here this weekend and try for a purchase next weekend.

Please assume I know nothing! I would be happier to be treated like a fool and have simple things noted than be overlooked. My camera days are now 10 years old and even then it was a low cost hobby cobbled together from second had purchases and hand downs.

I have (no used anymore) a very old Minolta (dads from 70’s) with standard lenses plus macro ability with a 2x converter and a long lens for long distant scenery shots. Also a Cannon T70 (I think 70, defiantly a T) again with the same as above.

    Cheers…..Q

I just bought a pansonic TZ3, it's got 10x Optical zoom, 7.2 MP, and Macro down to 1cm.
Got some good results, available from Fleabay for under £200, (although I bought mine in Hong Kong for £140)
    Details here

I like Canon myself. Have a look at the Boots sale thread by wtaylor. There are a few compact camera bargains on there that may go quickly.

I just bought my Dad a Panasonic Lumix FX07 for £164.98.

I paid for 3-5 days delivery and it came the next day too.

It's a really tasty piece of work and very compact.

I bought a Canon Powershot A85 at the start of the year & I'm over the moon with it. I have taken hundreds of photos & started trying out some of the manual options. It's slightly larger than some other contenders because it takes 4 AA batteries but this means you get a good grip on the camera (you'll have to see the design) and the batteries last a very long time.

I liked it so much I've bought my dad a Canon PowerShot A550 for his birthday, which is today Just noticed his takes 2 AA but the battery life still looks good (their specs).
