Help Old dial up modem problem

I just put win XP on a m8s mothers pc but she only uses a dial up modem (v90), anyway XP detected and installed the modem (com3), i manually set up the internet connection but when i click on "connect" im getting a "no dial tone" error. I can hear the modem click on and then click off again and have run a diagnostic in device manager which says the pc communicated with the modem.

The telephone is connected in the same way as it was before i did the upgrade and it definitely was working.

    Any ideas please?
    Cheers

Long time since I diag'd dial up probs, but from memory, it really sounds like a cable problem.. as in cable from modem to wall socket.. The click you hear is indeed windows sending the AT command, but as the modem doens't detect a dial tone from the cable, it times out and closes connection, hence the error.

have you tried changing the com port to 2 from 3

have you gone into advanced on the dial connection window and checked that its using that modem as default for dialing out

XP drivers are not good for modems, try installing the drivers it came with if possible
