    Question Rewire Phone line

I am getting increasingly fed up with wireless losing connections and just being slow so was wondering if anyone knows how I can rewire my phone line so that I can have my wireless router upstairs in my room (with my pc and xbox and soon to get 360) and the other pc's connect wirelessly cos they are only used for email and internet so losing connection isn't too a problem really.

Originally I had two phone lines, one for phone and the other for modem calls so the wires are already in the right place but when i moved to adsl I canceled the second line and decided to use wireless.

So the line currently going into my room is now disconnected.
I now need to rewire this from the top part of the master socket to the main section where the working phone line is but am not sure if I am allowed to do this and also not sure if just cutting the cable from the outside of the socket would increase the noise on the line (I am guessing so)

This whole thing makes me uneasy to say the least but I feel that as the line is already in place it cannot be too had to get it rewired into the main line again.

    Looking at this page:
    http://diydata.com/projects/telephon...ne_sockets.php

There seems to be the series wiring issue where by my disconnected line would somehow have to be connected in series with the other lines. This would also create problems for me since the line does not run anywhere near the end of the series in my phone setup.

I have bought a junction box but that has little to no instructions as to how to have the wires setup...

All in all I am a bit stuck at this stage.

Does anyone know anything about this and if so should I quit while I am behind or recon its worth a go to try and get it set up.

Cables are clearly much better than wireless...

I was not aware of that. When I was a kid I did try to rewire an old batman style phone into my light bulb socket. Half way through my brother cam in a turned the light on and I got a big shock.

My hair hasn't been the same again since

Not with a house light bulb because they work off ac current a phone line uses 30v - 50v of dc current so it would have to be a torch bulb etc

It would work with both ac and dc. Only thing that stops it is that a phone line isn't high enough voltage.

Coley, Jusk ask man. I've worked for a telecommunications company for the last year and a half - and i can do this in my sleep. You have been one of my best mates for like 5 years, yet u still dont know what job i do. Pfft. I know my actual title is a bit more complex and the stuff i work on is a bit different - but this aint no problem.

All you have to do is punch down the other phone socket to the same pins as the one you already have. So the master socket probably has 3 wires punched down in in.You will need to simply copy this arrangement in your secondary socket. (you may need an idc tool that u can get from me) And you won't get any real noise from cutting it and joining it back up. Its only working at 2MHz which is nothing .

I asked you in Jan and you never got back to me so I thought I might have better luck on here. Instead I just get tips on lighting lol.

I have a plastic IDC tool (I think) but my main problem is not knowing how to disconnect the other line from the master socket without breaking stuff.

Also is there not the issue that it has to be in series?

As I fixed your pc can you fix this for me next time you are at my house?

Yeah - well all you do is punch the wire down over the original master socket. That automatically puts it in series. Just make sure you have the correct pin outs. And i'm sure i would have told you then if you had asked nicely.

I didn't ask nicely. That doesn't sound like me.

Yeah my point is that the old phone line is still wired into the master socket (top half)
And dont know how to get into that part to disconnect it... I think ne way.

There are lots of cables in there, I get scared.

What is the point in a junction box in that case?

To make it look nicer than 2 cables twisted together.

Just unscrew the lid - see whats going on - you should just be able to pull the old section of cable straight off. Just try not to let any of the metal parts of the wires touch because you could short the 30V across the line - blow the fuse in the exchange - and then you would need to ring BT to tell them that your phone has gone dead

Then simply punch down the wire in the master socket - try and do it colour for colour so its easier later on and then punch down the secondary socket in your room.

Ok cool, will give it a go. Thanks man.

Think its earlier having this down on paper rather than me doing it from memory which is why I may have given up the last time I tried...

As I say my room is already sorted, just need to get that line reconnected to the working line. Then I will punch you down

    This guide is pretty comprehensive

    http://www.readman.dsl.pipex.com/oth...ecatwiring.htm

I think I have to take the whole thing off to get to the top half of the master socket tho since the cable seems to go into the top of the socket:

You might - but most sockets nowadays are only one compatment.

Ok here is what I have got.

The pic on the left shows that the left hand cable is the on i need to rewire. (now removed due to file size limit)
The next pic shows that inside the cable on the left is now on the right.
Looking at the third pic you can see that only 2 of the wires are connected, the blue and white ones from the main phone line and they are connected to the green and black cables from the brow line that leads to the outside world.

So I must need to connect the other line to this somehow...

The disconnected line (that still has a dial tone) is connected to the the socket at the front of this master box. So plugging a phone into that socket gives a dial tone but cannot dial any numbers.

Coley... I assume the socket in your pics above is the "dead" second line?

If so, then all that wiring is irrelevant apart from the fact that you can use it as a template to connect your extension to the same linebox. Run some wiring from the extension socket of your downstairs master socket (the top "clip off" bit) to the pictured linebox. Wire the pins in the same config as the existing wiring and bobs your uncle.

Take the wiring you've removed from the linebox and sell it on Ebay. That may help you recover some of the cash you wasted on a pointless junction box....

Nope.. most lineboxes now come with the 2 compartments, main BT section, and a DIY extension line section....

Yeah the front part of the socket is dead. The main line seems to be wired into the brown cable as in pic 3. So I somehow need to join these two lines together.

Alternatively I need to disconnect all of the cables from the front socket from the dead line so that I can rewire the master socket properly and then just have both lines feeding into the front panel.

At the moment the line in pic 3 feeds off to another box just next to the master socket

A light bulb (incandescent) is just a coil of wire in an inert gas filled glass envelope.

Ok finally starting to get there...

Have removed the secont line entirely cos that was just confusing me.

So the second pic sown here now has no wires.

Now I can either try and rewire the second line in the first pic into the box next to this master socket or attempt to rewire both lines into the grid in the second pic, which might be slightly harder...

Ok thanks for all the help guys.
Managed to get it sorted at the weekend.
I simply moved the second line from the master socket to the phone socket next to it and then attached the 2 wires to that socket.

Yay no more wireless and now get 100mb/s
Should have bought a gigabyte router hehe
