Wii Wii Shop Channel + Firmware Updates MUST READ!

With the Wii's Shop Channel undergoing maintenance, a series of updates came up to accompany it. Most users will be able to make 2-3 updates with one of them bumping the firmware to 3.0. Here are the known changes so far:

    Channels:
-Digital Clock added to the Wii Menu right under the channel bar
-Forecast Channel now displays the current condition (cloudy, raining, etc.) directly in the Wii Menu in the Forecast Channel box
-News Channel can now show 2 scrolling headlines at a time in the Wii Menu, 3 when you click on the button (supposedly this requires occasional downloading of the headlines to keep the ticker updated)
-Message Board now has the "Today's Accomplishments" message as a white message which allows it to stand out from other messages
-Address Book entries can now be shifted around using A+B (supposed to be a launch feature) but only to empty spaces. Not too convenient.
-Calendar in Message Board no longer shows "Today's Accomplishment" only days as having messages
-Scrolling messages in the Message Board now uses a different sound

Wii Shop Channel Overhauled (Visual aesthetic is the same, changes made to organization and browsing methods mostly)
-New Welcome screen detailing 4 Recommended Titles and the points they cost (gone is the title screen bar that had linkable games). The title bar can be clicked on to bring up a list of 20 recommended games.
-Titles You've Downloaded was moved to the main shop menu
    -New ways to browse
-Popular Titles (2 pages of 10 and includes launch games so not only based on recent info)
    -Newest Additions remains the same
-Search for a title which can use partial names
    -Search by Category
-System shows the different systems and how many titles have been released under each
-Publisher showing different publishers and amount of titles released (Nice logos!)
-Genre (different genres listed and amount of titles under each)

    Settings
-Warning added pre-system update detailing that technically modified consoles may cease to function upon being updated. Also the only way to not accept an update is to power down the console by holding the button for 4 seconds (the user can't back out of hitting I Accept w/o powering down)

Personally I think this is disgusting, What right have they to brick MY console if i've modded it ?

Fair enough, stop me using the shop (at £7 for a N64 game their loss), online gaming, even playing backups.... but to brick £180 of my money..... Bastards.

EDIT: If wiiconnect24 is on would it do this update automatically ?

no updates are done automatically, you have to agree to em first

they don't have a right to brick your wii intentionally but they do have the right to not guarantee that an update would work with something they have not tested on
You see, TheThingIs, eventually you'll be all right!

theyre not bricking consoles, its a warning that come sup AFTER you have updated and it meant to be a warning for future updates. Its very very unlikely that they can force detection of the drive chip mod and enforce it in a legit way to may it brick your machine. The warning comes up on unmodded machines aswell.

loads of people are reporting no problems at all updating with a mod in, however there are reports that the wiikey update disk (a GC disk) stops working after the update, but can still be booted using a CGOS boot disk.

Yeah.... I see your point. Still I'd be visiting my retailer with a bricked wii if it happened.

Just had a squizz over on maxconsole, many there reporting a successful update as 909 says above.

there is this warning screen in some cases it seems, but i think its basically to cover them if you happen to run an american/japanese update from an import game

    So who has done it?

Would it not just make sense to remove the chip (For those who have mounted it externally like myself), do the update then re-attach the mod?

Surely worst case scenario the mod will not work but the wii will be in tact?

well if u can remove it, its not going to hurt anything to do so, loads of people have updated with mods in now tho, it looks safe to me.

I don't use the shop or any of the other features, so at the moment I'm holding off any upgrades until a game comes along that needs it

theres no reason why one mod would work and not another, especially wiifree/wiinja etc, ive seen reports of it working on all mods now.

Just updated with wiikey to 3.0E, works fine.

They've also fixed the parental control input, it used to display the pin on the screen as you entered it, it just display's asterix's now....

The warnings seem to cover them for future FW upgrades.. interesting times ahead !

Who's willing to bet that mario galaxy will be the game that requires the next firmware update in order to run ??

Just updated my Wii to the latest firmware 3.0E with a Cyclowiz v2 installed 3.0b and all works fine, tested several backups, gamecube games using GCOS and can also boot the Cyclowiz 3.5 update disc.

I did hold the reset switch in when powering on the console to disable the chip before i ran the upgrade, don't know if this needs to be done or not but all works fine for me.
