Default Unknown Device on wired network

I've just setup a new router for the office network, after a few problems it's up and running.

I have one problem left: there is an unknown device attached - if I turn all the machines off it is still there, its not causing any real problem other than it's using an ip address I would like to use.

The setup is all computer connect to a switch (Cisco catalyst 2950) as does the HP Business Injet and the router from which comes the internet.

    Any ideas?

Also, some of the computer names are being shown - only unknown followed by the mac address.

    I'm stumped.

Edit : The router is a BT Business Hub

Not a bussioness set up. BUt on my router i am allowed to say yes and no to people.

If you do not knwo where it is from i woudl stop its access. FIrst and foremost for security and secondly as you mention it uses an IP you wish to.

Not sure on the name showing front, i think this can be controlled through WinServer2003, i vaiguley remember somethgin being set up through ours (old office).

I am sure someone will be abel to help you further.

Is there an online PDF manual (full) of the BT stuff you have?

    Cheers....Q

It's not the routers address that's 0.1, the one that's being used is 0.3.

maybe the printer is the unknown device? and if it is wireless someone is probably using it that has seen the router to get the mac code.

where do you see the attached device? on the router or the switch?

if its on the router then maybe the switch has an IP for logging into the config

remember your printer will have an IP too, but i'd imagine thats static so that you can actually connect to it

It's not the I know about him.

The unknown device (using Marcode's suggestion) is non-Windows with no host name or net bios name.

I can only think it is the switchas Two Planks suggests.

If you turn off all of the machines then how can you tell its still there?
Is it not the machine you are using to log onto the router to check this with?

lol, no I set all the PCs with static IP addresses and what I check the router when all but my PC are off there are 2 devices - my PC (04) and the ghostly device (03). And of course the router set at 01.
