    Default Component to VGA Cable

    All,

I am looking to hook up my DVD Player to my TV upstairs. The Samsung does not have component in, only VGA..

My DVD Player is Component Out, my question is will the VGA to Component cables on Ebay work? They are advertised as VGA to TV/Projector etc... but I want to do it the other way...

    Any advice would be appreciated.

Your TV has a VGA port is that right. Im confused. Your dvd player is component out. Your tv has vga but no component? Is it a tv or a monitor. Does it have coaxial svideo, anything. what about the dvd - only component? I find it odd that you have a tv with vga input and no other option.

cause I dont think it will work from dvd to vga. from video card to monitor/projector ya

    Hi mate,

Yeah the TV is an older model 19" Samsung so has no Component Input. It does have VGA input though to support Progressive scan/HD resolutions.

The DVD Player is component out (Yes it does have SVHS/Scart too but I want to take advantage of progressive scan) and will be going into the TV via VGA.

I have done some digging and the cable will work if it is bi-directional. I am waiting back from the seller on this as the professional cables are £35+ !

Ya.. i wasnt sure if you knew what you were talking about. you got it. and Im sure if it just a basic cable it would be bi-directional. Either way, you will find many manufacturers for what you want.

you cant connect component to vga with any sort of 'cable'. there would need to be some fairly hefty conversion done = $$'s

vga is red green and blue signals at a certain frequency with a sync signal

    component is Y'PbPr

any converter would need to recover the Y'PbPr to a baseband signal and then convert again into rgb/sync

keene electronics probably make something to do it but it wont be cheap

Admittedly, if your dvd player outputs RGB component and not Y'PbPr component (fairly unlikely) there is a chance a lead could work, IF (big if) your TV could sync to the frequency

Will one of those gadgets to play a ps2 on your pc monitor do the trick?! They were pricey too tho, about £50. Only place I saw them was lik-sang, but they're gone now...

by my understanding, that cable is only good if your vga port isnt really a vga port but actually a muti function port that happens to look like a vga port.

Look in the tv manual and see if it supports Y'PbPr input via the 'vga' port.

I had the Xbox 360 playing through it on HD settings... Does that mean it will be ok and supports Y'PbPr?

not if using a 360 VGA cable as that is using vga style screen modes and the 360 creates a traditional multi res 'vga' output just like a pc

Ah ok.. Maybe for the sake of £5 i'll just grab one of these cables off Ebay.

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FOR-PC-LAPTOP-...QQcmdZViewItem

It'll come in handy for when I get a projector in the future if nothing else.

Expensive and then reliant upon the quality of the cicuitry within the "Conversion box" unlikely to be worthwile and probably cheaper to buy a cheap TV with component in

I'll try this cable. If no good then i'll just use Scart for now until I shove this TV in the spare bedroom and get a 32" for the main bedroom

I wouldn't bother with the ebay one, that specifically confirms what maltloaf said. The other one either will do your job, or the ad is worded wrong (from what I could make out). If I'm correct on that (I'll let you analyse the text as it's your money), you can buy the 1st one, and demand a refund, or even get credit card company to do a chargeback if it don't work.
