bit of 'o rant this one.
system is athlon 64 3800+
ecs kn1 extreme,
nvidia 8600 gt
1gb (2 *512mb matched pair) crucial/micron memory
2 seagate sata2 320gb
2 wd raptors 80gb ( one suspected faulty).
running xp pro.
started running a bit funny after a windows update a few months back, would not
access the home network but could get on the net, would also reboot during any
hard drive scans (chkdsk) so presuming one of the raptors that where in a striped
raid was faulty i decided to back everything up on a couple of spare drives and
build a new raid array through the onboard nvidia nforce 4 controller with the sata2
drives, i was aware of problems people where having with the controller as ecs
ommitted any instructions about this from the manual.
so i put the raid drivers on a floppy, plug the sata hd's into the nvidia sockets,
set up the raid in bios and booted from the cd, got the raid drivers installed and
got to the setup screen.
all seems ok up to now but when i format the drives (about 600gb) it keeps hanging
at random points, highest it got was 74%, then reboots and comes up with boot device
failure.
tried the recovery console and tried the fixmbr, set a partition then tried the format
from the prompt with the same results.
even tried unplugging all unused items to check if it was the psu.
checked the memory on another pc and that came up fine.
been at this a few days now, starting to get on my nerves, thinking about getting
a seperate card but havn't got a spare pcie slot (would kinda slow the drives down
though, i think pci-e 1x is only 2.5gb's, the sata2's should run at 3gb's, that could be
pushing 6gb's and could cause a bottleneck on the pci bus so don't really wanna go
down that route.
any ideas?
will keep trying different things and post any updates.
