the Dark Messiah of Might and Magic

I have run the game about half way through when i decided to change from Vista to XP. i saved the SAVE folder to a memory stick and formated my PC.

Now i am running XP home edition, and the GAME DOESNT WORK ANYMORE.

When i run it, it goes through the intro video's and get to the "loading" window. It loads for may be 5 seconds, then it terminates and goes back to windows.

I have installed DirectX 9c
i have installed all the drivers that came with my computer
i have installed service pack 2

WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN NOW :emot97:

And more importantly, how can i fix it... Any hints (no matter how hopeless) will be good :emot101:

I think i've got a part of the solution. If i move the image file i use to disk C: , i cant access it. It sais "Access denied" when i choose it with demon tools.

So why am i denied access to my own harddisk?

start a new game and look for where it creates the save. Search for the file name. If that doesnt work the there might have been a second file put somewhere else that the game needs

As i said, I cant start the game at all. Look at that video up there. The game gets as far as showing the intro video's before it shuts down on me =(

ok sorry wasnt really awake looong day in work. Right time for some downloads then. 1st make sure you have the latest video card drivers. Then the latest soundcard drivers. Install these. then make sure you have the latest directx. check the month. re-install direct x after the video and sound drivers. Re-Install then game. get the latest game patch. check your display settings. make sure they are set to 1024x768. then cross your fingers and try the game again.

hokay. It looks like it is the Video Card Drivers that are having problems. It seems to get to just before the menu and as soon as it tries to use the 3d side of the video card it gives up. Sorry couldnt be more help

ok, i thought so to. I just reinstalled XP, and now my webcam is working. The last time, it was technically working, but the screen was just gray. Now it works perfectly. But the game still doesnt work, so i was wondering if it has something to do with the order in which i install the drivers and directX.

this time first i installed the LAN driver to get to the internet and download Service pack 2, then i installed all the drivers to my PC's components, then i installed the game which automaticly installed DirectX 9.0c afterwards.

Is there anything in that that would cause my game not to work?

In theory you should install any motherboard drivers first I.E Lan

Then install any soundcard drivers

Then install the Video Card Drivers

Then finally install Direct X

You might find some more help here. there does seem to be one or two problems with Might and Magic.

The other thing to do is check if other games work it will test if the Video Card and drivers are working.

Well, the windows built-in games are working Cards and stuff. The only other game i have is Gothic, which doesnt word eighter. =/

I'll try reinstalling the drivers in your order

It still sounds like it is the 3D side of the graphics card that is not starting properly. Have you been to the manufacturers website and downloaded the latest video card drivers?

that would seem to be the main fix for it.

For Steam User: In the "My Games" menu, right click "Dark Messiah of Might & Magic Single Player", select "Properties", then "Set Launch Options" and add: +mat_forcemanagedtextureintohardware 0

For DVD User: Right Click the shortcut to the game and add on the target exe line +mat_forcemanagedtextureintohardware 0.
With a default installation you should get:

"C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Dark Messiah of Might and Magic\mm.exe" +mat_forcemanagedtextureintohardware 0

It proved to fix:
- Crash on Loading
- Crash on Bink
- FPS down to 1 on GeForce 6800 during gameplay
- Increase Loading times a LOT

because Windows is SHITE!! Linux is brilliant! As long as you are ROOT (admin) in Linux, you can do ANYTHING, and it WONT stop you (however, it may warn you!)!! But its not so good for inexperienced users who might delete system files!

Ok, i've installed every driver in your order, i've ensured i have the latest patch, i've set my "SWAP aviable on harddrive" to 10000MB, i've added that text to the end of my shortcut link... It still crashes right after the intro commercial thingies are played :emot101:

Anything else i can do?

(I am having problems with my HD, thought. I have to enter a password to start STARTING the computer. Before the start-up, i have to unlock the HD. I have the pass, but i can no longer get into BIOS and shut it off. That is because the password i set to enter bios is TWO NUMBERS TOO LONG!!! How can i then enter BIOS if my pass isn't valid?)

I have ATI mobility radeon X1600 256MB

But i am still convinced that all my problems r linked to the locked HD. Any suggestions?
I am already crackin at trying to unlock my BIOS =(

OK, HD problem fixed... Game still crashing... What could POSSIBLY be wrong now X-(

The only theory left i've got is the chipset driver; which i've heard can create the weirdest errors if not updated properly.
The only problem is that i have no idea what my Chipsets called
