Coca Cola readying self-chilling soft drinks?

Turns out, Coca Cola may be plotting a new version of Sprite that actually chills itself upon opening. Apparently, the drink has to be kept at a specified temperature before being snappeup, and once the oh-so-thirsty consumer pops the top, "a mechanism inside creates ice made from the drink, so it is not diluted." Reportedly, the beverage would sensibly be called Sprite Super Chilled, and if it does indeed hit the UK (and prove successful) by "early next year," the technology could then be passed along to Coke, Diet Coke or even "super cold alcoholic drinks, particularly beers."

Lol I agree with DG but a very good and useful concept as long as the drink prices don't rise!

    Its simple chemistry really.

The drop in pressure on opening will probably activate an endothermic reaction in the mechanism (eg. dissolving ammonium chloride in water) which will absorb temperature from the drink causing it to self chill.

Nescafe do/did a similar thing with self-heating coffee. Buy a can (was about £1.30 a can) push a button underneath and the chemicals react and heat the insulation in the can. Was pretty naff, coffee wasn't kept hot long enough and tasted like shit. Good concept though

I much prefer the explanation given in the coco-cola advert where little creatures shred little snow men and use a desktop fan to spray the snow onto the bottle.

Why you boffins insist on explaining it in a complicated way, i'll never know!

It's also worth mentioning that warm Coke tastes worse than old peoples pee.
