    Info Sports Massage

    Tore my calf muscle playing badminton a few months back, everything healed pretty quickly and was back playing in a few weeks. After playing the same calf used to go really tight for a couple of days then go back to normal. Rested it a bit longer but always the same symptoms, very tight and awkward to walk. After doing some research and reading about micro tears, decided to go for a sports massage.

    It was only done tuesday for 30 minutes which included ultrasound too, played that night and done some other activities last night and it feels the best its been since before the tear. I have another session booked next week just for some final tweaking but its looking pretty good.

    So if anybody is suffering from some niggly injuries or does a lot of sport would thoroughly recommend getting a body service, i reckon about an hour for a full body workout. Worth the money, must say its not a relaxing massage though, no pain no gain.

    Default Re: Sports Massage

    Totally agree mate, I've had regular massages for year (about every 3-4 weeks). As well as treating a specific injury it also helps your lypmhatic system by circulating toxins around your body, which in turn makes the muscles strengthen and heal. There's so many different types of massage, it's a very interesting skill. I've even contemplated doing a course so I can learn the art properly.

    "What is sports massage?

    Many athletes believe that a complete training programme should include not just the exercise itself, but also regular massage.

    Because each sport uses the muscle groups in different ways, a qualified sports massage therapist will have a sound knowledge of the muscular and skeletal systems, and tailor the treatment for each individual athlete. Sports massage is often supplemented by other massage therapy styles, including Swedish massage, deep tissue, trigger point (myotherapy), shiatsu, acupressure, compression, cross-fibre and lymphatic massage.

    What is sports massage good for?

    A sports massage has many benefits for an athlete, or anyone doing regular exercise. It can:

    * relax your muscles

    * fight fatigue

    * relieve any swelling you have around your joints

    * boost circulation and the immune system so that the body heals more quickly

    * improve your flexibility and body strength

    * reduce your heart rate and blood pressure

    * increase your circulation and lymph flow

    * make it easier for you to recover more quickly after you've done strenuous exercise

    * make it less likely you'll get more injuries by getting rid of the tension in the muscles

    Sports massage can also read the body to see if there are any areas where the soft tissue or muscle is weaker, and help strengthen it to prevent it from breaking down.

    Some people even believe that sports massage can provide that extra 'edge' to competitive athletes, getting the body into shape faster and reducing recovery time after heavy workouts.

    Although sports massage is aimed at people who regularly push their bodies through strenuous exercise, it can benefit the everyday-Kay too. If you're running around with small children all the time, or you have a physically demanding job, a regular sports massage may help you. Sports massage is often prescribed by doctors to treat back or muscle-strain or as part of a rehabilitation programme for people who've had an injury."
