If you are using an atheros based chipset I strongly recommend using Backtrack 2 bootable linux cd available here and reading the guide here to get you started!

    Happy trails!

cheers mate but i keep getting told of different people use backtrack otherssay use aircrack for windows , another guy said comview for wifi .

i think as ive got the aircrack for windows working so far up to step 7 in the above tutorial ill stay with thaty fopr the time being .

just need a little help with the step 7 problem about channel hopping
    thanks anyway .

to be honest i tried the backtrack live cd in my laptop but it wouldnt boot . im not partitioning anything for a complete install of backtrack as i aint wanting to mess up my laptop as its only 2 week old.

theres a tutorial in here on running aircrack under windows using vmware

you are better of doing in linux via livecd or vmware
windows is very poor in terms of wifi hacking

The BackTrack Linux distro (v2) contains AirCrack and its sister apps...

BackTrack is the perfect CD-ROM for script kiddies wanting to get free WiFi access ;-)

all you need to do is change the boot priority setting in your bios mate, I swear the backtrack 2 cd will work if you do that and it wont affect your lappy.

By default boot prio is usually floppy > hdd > cd-rom

so if you change it so that the cd-rom is before the hdd - bingo, cd booting :

I totally understand not wanting to mess your new toy up tho so gl with your decision

ok i aint giving up .. why when i type iwconfig into a backtrack prompt do i get
    lo no wireless extensions
    etho no wireless extensions

the card i have is an
    Atheros AR5007EG Wireless Network Adapter
    thats built into my laptop

ive installed commview for wifi and when i installed it installed the commview
    drivers .
its updated my drivers as it says "[CommView] Atheros AR5007EG Wireless Network Adapter" when i go to device manager and look at network addapters.
should them driver be rolled back to just standartd comview drivers ?

i lso have one of these that undertaker had http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Netgear-WG111v...QQcmdZViewItem

arer there any special drivers i need for the netgear usb to work in backtrack ?
    thanks

i hacked a mates neighbours wireless in about half hour using the same usb wireless adapter as you and the vmware virtual machine i downloaded from aircrack-ng.org...

    http://www.aircrack-ng.org/doku.php#virtual_machine

it even comes with a script for hacking the wireless so you don't have to bother with the over complex linux shell...
