I've used VSO's ConvertXtoDVD 3 before. Just drag and drop the avi and sub file to it, click convert and walla.

You want hard coded subs as you could add them to a DVD so they work via the "subs" button on the remote. What do you normally use to convert the avi to a DVD?

You must have done something wrong then, all that's needed to be done is drag the avi and srt file to convertxtodvd and that's it. Once burnt to disc, stick it in a dvd player, press the subs button on the remote and select ya subs, job done.
