Could i install my works vpn client on my home pc??? Would they know i was not coming in from the laptop???
If they monitor MAC addresses then yes they would.

It all depends on what software they use and policies they have in place.
Some VPN connections are setup so not only do you need to have the right security settings but also to a set of other policy requirements too, such as virus definitions, personal firewall etc.
Plus, once (if) you get a tunnel, you will also need to consider what sevices you are connecting in for and what security they have - I guess they would be part of a domain that your home PC isn't part of. Can all be worked around but don't forget these guys are your employers and your actions are tracable and I'm sure you would be in breech of some internal policy. I wouldn't take the risk, if you have a laptop for remote access then I would use that.
